Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Does your clutch make a "pop/thunk" noise?

    Hi all,

I would appreciate it if anyone here could please check your Golf GT / GTI with 6 speed manual transmissions and report back here...

When the engine is running at idle and the car is not in gear press the clutch to the floor and quickly raise release the clutch. Within the first 3 cm of travel I hear a soft pop/thunk similar to hitting a metal fry pan with a wooden spoon. The noise is much louder when changing gears - the critical factor is the quick release of the first 3 cm of clutch travel. No noise is heard when releasing slowly.

Does your Golf MK5 do this?

I have a 2007 Golf GT (1.4 petrol supercharger/turbo model) with a six speed manual gearbox. I recently had a transmission failure and 5th and 6th gears were replaced under warranty at a dealer in Sydney. The noise has been present ever since the car has come back from the dealer. I mentioned the noise when I brought the car back for the GT recall two weeks ago and the dealer has had the car ever since.

I found a youtube video displaying a similar noise. Two people commented that its normal. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=351zeQaT_CI

Thanks in advance for your support.

I THINK what you're referring to is actually a hydraulic clutch noise...I've got a mk3 VR6 and my clutch is hydraulic..when I asked about this I was told that since it isn't a cable clutch it might not engage/disengage as fast as you kick your foot into it, so you will be hearing the hydraulic attempting to keep up with you.

Don't quote me on this, but this is what it sounds like to a not-too-mechanically-talented-dubber

Appears to be a normal trait of Golf GT 6 speed manual

After 2.5 weeks at *** dealer the noise was determed to be 'normal'. A brand new 2008 Golf GT with 100 km on the clock has the _exact_ same noise.

The scuffed alloy wheel came free of charge too. (Likely due to 3 trips to the outsourced transmission shop)

Right now I'm just happy to be back in the car.

Maybe I could accept that the noise was inherent and normal but not the scuffed wheel, take it up with the dealer.
BTW, they had your car for 2 1/2 weeks, did they give you a loaner?

              Cheers

                Loaner car?

I was given a loaner car after the first week... an automatic Polo I nicknamed '****box'. Better than nothing...
