Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Goodbye VR6

Sadly, last Saturday my VR6 was written off. Fortunately my wife was OK but the car was not. To say that she has now a lot of confidence in the strength of a Golf is an understatement. She only had a bit of bruising from the seatbelt and her shin hit something. Her shoulder also hit the pillar. The worse damage to her was the ego, for which I am thankful. Fortunately she heeded my advice and went for a drive in my Patrol and has her confidence back.
She dropped a wheel off the bitumen, turned too hard to correct and ended up going over a bank through a ditch, then a fence and ended up in a pecan nut orchard. The car stayed on its wheels, what was left on the LH side. I have not seen the damage but there is a cd with all the pics for me to see when I get home in a couple of weeks time from Africa.
It goes without saying that it will be replaced with another Golf. I am considering a new or near new 2.0tdi with DSG and would like some idea what to expect regards VW warranty and service, any thing to be aware of, and service costs in the real world as well as anything else I should know before putting the very hard earned money down.
    Thanks, Graeme

I am not considering the GTI as it is well above my price range, but at astretch I can go a demo, or hopefully a runout model sale. (When are the new models coming??). I gather the Pacific is simply a Sportline to tide the model over until the next one. Timeline anyone??

Hey mate, first of all I'm glad to hear your wife is doing ok, it sounded like quite an overwhelming experience. Thankyou for the story though, it will put my mother at ease if she thinks I'm going to crash my car

I'd go for a GT 2.0TDI if you can mate, talk to Mischa (he'll chime in on this conversation sometime) he's got one and he loves it to bits. If not, I'm sure the 2.0TDI would still be a fantastic car.

Thank goodness your wife is OK.

You would not be the first to attribute the survival of loved one(s) to the strength of the Volkswagen Golf.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Mk V.

The MkV 2.0 TDI with DSG is a forgone conclusion as one of our pilots got one and raves about it. I now have to see what deals I can get, but I expect to have to go to Brisbane area for a decent deal as our local dealer is not known to be innovative in his pricing. It will be another couple of weeks before I am home so it gives me time to do the research on the net before making a decision.
