Once again, you need to drive these things hard to run them in.!!!!
I'd be very worried if one of my cars wasn't using slight amounts of oil between services.

Oil will always be burnt. Can never escape that. If the level never drops it means something is filling it back up. If that's not you then you know one thing for certain: Its not good for your engine's longetivity.

Mine has 60,000km on it, I've owned it since new and I have never had to top up the oil between changes, and I've always checked it religiously. If the car is burning excessive oil and shows signs of blowing some smoke then it's longevity is already compromised meaning there's issues with the oil control rings not sealing correctly within the cylinder bore, and allowing oil into the combustion chamber.

My Jetta has almost done 31000 kilometers, and has never used a drop, which I have needed to top up.
Thats the way I like it.
I have a bottle of oil given to me by the dealership, which is still waiting to be opened.

You are correct. Oil useage where you have to top it up between changes is an indication something is not sealing properly (hence why it happens in both new and old engines, for different reasons obviously). But what I said is still true..Every combustion stroke a tiny little bit of oil is burnt.

Car was driven "well" out of the box. I did about 200 k's after I picked it up in Canberra and drove it fairly hard and then drove it back to Melbourne the next day. Changing speeds, took it up to about 160kph, tried not to cruise too long on any one speed.

Luckily, I bought the car off a good friend in Canberra who also happens to be an influence with VGA.

I'm not too concerned at this point with 2 years still on my warranty. If a re-build is necessary then so be it.

            Thanks for the advice guys.
So if its got 2 years still left on warranty... then its 1 year old already...

Dude, I dare say you got a problem with your car.

Just out of curiousity, what do your plugs look like. Do they have any carbon build up on them? Are they burned black in any way, or do they have any white deposites on them??
My Polo GTI used 500ml of oil in the first 5000km, but now with 19,500km on it, I haven't used a drop since.

Pretty sure we are talking about TFSI here in a GTI.

                  Cheers

Well i have just ticked over 1000k and i have been driving it like i normally would... giving it heaps and i have checked the oil level and its close to being full..... so i think you need to just not listen to the sales people who tell you to take it easy for 1000k's and let everything settle in before giving it hard time...

Just for curiosity i googled on how to bed the new engine in and most of the article that i have read all say you should load the engine up for the rings to bed in properly against cylinder walls...

Well im a happy camper now and i better take her out now....

Now i need to start looking for some performance enhancements any recommendations you guys have? I want more power, better sound and handling improved...

Power increase is the best and easiest mod you will ever do to your car.
Which one is probably the biggest area of disagreement on the forum.
They are a simple plug in and redo the software on the engine ECU.
The price varies from $700 to $1800 and they are all good but they are all different.
The claimed variations in power and torque is quite large.

It is the best mod you will ever do to your GTI and it is guarenteed to give you a grin from ear to ear.

Best to try and get to a GTG and go for a couple rides in different tuned cars, you will find most are very happy to show off their pride and joy.

It is much the same with handling
Sound depends on how far you want to go, many are happy with an additioal sub.

BTW as far as running in the car, drive it like you want it to run for the life of the car (drive it like a grand dad if thats how you want it to behave for the rest of its days)

Not a drop of oil used in my TFSI over 14 months and (shamefully, only) 5000kms. I don't abuse it, and I occasionally baby it, but otherwise I use that 2.0T for what it's meant to

Cool... so is it like they plug it in and re-flash the factory computer?
What companies are there that do that? And which ones are the most popular?

As for the sound i like the idea of adding a sub but im more in to the performance rather then doof doof...

why would you want to add a subwoofer to the GTI?

The sound system is pretty well balanced as it is. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a premium sound system but its really not too shabby at all (i find it lacks midrange and just struggles to do the high notes in some styles of music I like - instrumental rather than doofdoof - but everyone has different ears and i love a "bright" sounding system). Adding a sub will most likely ruin the fairly balanced sound it has.

Considering there's no obvious branding on the system I am still impressed with it. Certainly beats the "Infinity" premium sound package on the jeep wrangler rubicon i test drove just before the golf.

There are a number of companies that remap VAG ECUs for more performance. Look for huge threads with lots of strong emotion and you'll find way more opinions (and significantly lesser amounts of hard facts) than you know what to do with.

If you are risk averse and you are really attached to the factory warranty then remapping (like many "performance" mods) may not be for you.
