Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Genuine Brake Pads

Have the Jetta in at the dealer for 45K service at the moment, got a call saying rear pads need replacement. Asked how much............$300 fitted.............no points for guessing what my response was!

I don't mind paying a premium for genuine but that is an unbelievable price! Needless to say, I'm now in the market for aftermarket pads!

Also, first car I've ever owned where rear pads wear out before fronts but I had noticed the rears were more worn than the fronts when I rotated the tyres.

    Cheers

Call Tooley imports in Waitara. They import OEM parts for VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. http://www.tooleyimports.com.au/
Usually better than half price for OEM parts in original manufacturers packaging. Pads for my BM were $100.
When you ask for a price tell them it's retail not trade. I havn't used them for my VW yet but my mate buys all his Transporter parts for much less than VW charge.

had my rear pads done couple of months ago on my 2005 tdi dsg with 48000ks. $180 parts and labour inc. at the stealership. Fronts and all 4 discs were fine vw said quote "can usually get 2, even up to 3 sets of pads to a set of discs, there pretty hard wearing" but i guess it all depends on how you drive.

i went through this process with my old GTI when it came to change my worn pads and rotors. i upgrades to an aftermarket set up and it was worth the extra money for sure!
went to Swiss Auto today to get them to check out my brakes cos theyre squealing like bastards. i know at the last service i was told my rotors and pads have about 15k left in them and that seems right too judging by the massive lip on my rotors. i have always said to myself that when it comes...

The Peugeot 206 I just upgraded from always needed the rear pads replaced before the front ones. It never made sense to me either.

Bought pads for $75, ran out of time to do them myself before my little wine escapade in the Hunter Valley so paid $70 to have them fitted.

I'm $155 in front, and the dealer has no credibility with either their parts price or their "standard time allowed is 1.3 hours". Yeah right!

It's simple, the VWs (and the Pug it sounds like too) have the brakes biased towards the rear under normal braking to reduce the amount that the car's nose dips.
