Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Amp upgrade options

I've just replaced the front speakers in my car with Focal 165AS3s - not audiophile-grade speakers, but the improvement in sound quality and bass response is huge. Only trouble is I think I'm hitting the power limits of the factory amp. Occasionally one of the six speakers clips or cuts out, and fiddling with the volume brings it back - which makes me assume it's an amp issue, not a wiring/grounding issue.

Wondering if anyone here has any advice on what route to take with an amp upgrade? The factory system in my car has an amp under the passenger seat: part number 1K6-035-456-B. The thing that makes an amp upgrade difficult is that the amp has built-in crossovers, and individual outputs to each of the 10 door speakers running from the amp itself. I think I can work out which wires run to which speaker, but I still want a new amp to fit under the passenger seat, and squeezing an amp *and* crossovers into that space looks tricky. (I'm also not planning on fitting new rear speakers - I have a 3-door, and accessing those speakers is a PITA - so would need to source some crossovers to run those speakers).

So far I'm leaning towards sticking with Focal, and getting either one of these - Focal FD 4.350 ULTRA-COMPACT 4-CHANNEL AMPLIFIER - or one of these - Focal IMPULSE 4.320 COMPACT 4-CHANNEL DIGITAL AMPLIFIER - not sure if the latter is going to be powerful enough, though?

I gather another option is to replace the factory amp with a Dynaudio amp (3C0-035-456-C). I'm also running an RCD330, and I've heard mixed feedback on how well the Dynaudio system works with that head unit - plus I can't find any specs on power output, etc...

I'm also running a powered underseat subwoofer using a LOC that taps into the head unit outputs (I think - the LOC was installed by a previous owner and I'm not 100% sure where the wiring all goes). Not sure if that affects anything?

Any and all experience with stereo/amp installs appreciated!!
