  • Severely Squeaking Brakes

Evening V-dub enthusiasts, the issue of squeaking brakes has been brought up here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ghlight=brakes and here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ghlight=brakes.

My GT Sport is suffering from the same problem, and during the 24M3 upgrade I took the opportunity to bring the VW mechanics attention to it only to be told, as was the case for livingthedream, that it's normal due to pad material. If this was true shouldn't all MKV's be experiencing squeaky brakes? They proceeded to 'clean' them, yet as soon as I drove away the brakes squeaked. Now it's not just a little squeak, it is extremely loud beyond normal squeaking reminiscent of a truck coming to a halt. Any advice towards a solution, particularly from VW-reps that may be members, would be greatly appreciated.

id just push the case till they fixed it. they just cant be bothered so they'll tell you any old crap. ask them if they'd use a car with brakes so squeely as a test driving demo car... i think not!

Must admit that my GT's brakes are as quiet as a mouse wearing ugg boots.
        Never made any noise whatsoever.
Make my rims (especially the back ones) pretty dirty with big chunks of dust, but never ever noisy at all.

I reckon that would be louder than a barefooted mouse!

In all seriousness...my brake pads (or discs..whichever causes it) were replaced a little while before I got my car, and they used to squeal a fair bit; it's kinda stopped now. I can appreciate how you feel because squeaking is embarrassing, let alone so horrible to hear.

Moral to my post? If VW won't get off their arses about it, let it wear out because it will eventually go away..

Mine squeak too about 40% of the time when coming to a stop.
Bit of a PITA, perhaps i should mention it at my next service.

Had mine for 30000km now and they still squeak, I also brought it up at service and was given the "its normal" line I just live with it now, only had the car for ten months now so its not like its a glazing issue, I just think thats the way it is

I read somewhere that to properly bed brakes in requires half a dozen crash stops from 100ks down to 20ks, such that the bonding glue in the pads gets hot enough to stink. Apparently it embeds some of the pad material into the rotors as well, eliminating the problem of shuddering brakes which are known to happen.

I haven't done that in mine, the brakes are quiet, but I plan on doing so as soon as I find somewhere to do so without Mr Plod getting excited and taking away my toy for hooning

Not sure they have to be crash stops, rather moderate stops from approx 60Km/Hr. Crash stops potentially generate excessive heat that could warp the rotors. This is DBA recommended procedure:-

Disc Brakes Australia is an Australian manufacturer and designer of OE & aftermarket brake rotors, brake pads, calipers, hydraulics and other ancillary items.

I've never found my brakes to be at all noisy, I'd take it up with the dealer if they were.

                  Cheers

Should add after about another 1000kms of non squeeking after having the issue finally looked at i now get the occasional squeek, but no where near as bad as before.

I can live with what i get now, but before was a joke.

When it comes to replacing them i wont be using VW pads thats for sure.

Must admit that I may have inadvertently done just this procedure on my car.
I bought it in Melbourne and drove it back up to Adelaide - so I'd prolly did quite a few 100-0 stops - although none were what I'd call 'crash' stops.

Mebbe this helped make my brakes so quiet? Dunno

I got the "nothings wrong with it" treatment too followed by the new pad composition explanation.

After insisting they decided, following a test-drive, that it may be the rear brakes. So they proceeded to de-dust and apply anti-squeal. Driving down the mechanics driveway they squealed so the car went back in that week and following another test-drive they decided it might be the front brakes so they removed the pads, filed off rough edges and glazing, applied anti-squeal, carried out rebedding, and then explained to me that they did this as goodwill since this is not covered by warranty. Drove off and on my way to work the squeal was worst it has ever been. Does this prove that the pads are the problem? And surely on a 10 month (11,800kms) old vehicle this is covered by warranty. Your thoughts?

This seems to be a pretty common problem among 08 models on this board. hmmmm.....
