Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Mk V GTi Oil Usage

Anyone else have issues with Oil Usage on their Mk V's.

I have about 38,000K on my 06 Build , and the last service was done at 29,000K and 2 months ago. No oil on the driveway at all.

Last week the oil light came on, and I put 1 ltr in, this week a re-check showed I needed more, so another Ltr has gone in.

The question is , only 2 months since last service seems a bit light on.

    I drive about 500K + per week, with a 50:50 mix of city/freeway.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the last service wasn't done properly.

Mine is an 06 build with 44,000 KM on the clock and has consistently used a little under a litre every 5,000 KM. I don't think this particularly uncommon on the TFSI engine although I think mine is probably towards the higher end of the oil usage scale.

    Cheers

how much oil are you using in how many kms?
Its not uncommon to use a litre within a few thousand kms. Mine seems to use nowhere near that but ive heard of others using more.

Can't follow your arithmetic - you say you do 500ks+ a week, and your last service was at 29,000k 8 weeks ago, and you now have 38,000k.

What caused the extra 5000ks? the + on your 500ks must be 600

Anyway, do you know what oil was put in at the last service - perhaps they put the wrong oil in and that's why it is suddenly consuming it? Did they put enough in?

Theres a interstate trip or two in there as well.

Last service was done at Solataire Mile End, and they didn't say which oil they used, but the service light wasn't reset, and the service book has been stamped but not ticked (the checklist)

Anyway its going to a different service centre for the 24M5 recall check, i'll get them to do a once over.

there is a thread on this somewhere. not unsual for gti to chew through oil between 5000-7000kms. i had a seal break on me after 20000kms and caused a small leak...i didn't notice it until my warning light came on...which was 4000kms after service.

You Should be Checking your Oil more often!

It is really a bad practice to wait until the oil lght comes on before checking the oil. As a guide you should be doing this once a week or when you fill the tank. It is an oil pressure light not an oil level light - serious damage can result if you wait until the light comes on.

Having said that, some Golf motors seem to use a little more oil than average - I don't know why, maybe differing breakin procedure? Many modern motors do use more oil than the oldies because the manurfacturers now try to lessen friction from piston rings to the absolute minimum.

A little preventative care will save you serious expenditure down the track.

Check the oil weekly? Yeah sure, for an old dunger but not a near-new vehicle. More like once a month maybe...

I reckon the instrument cluster receives two signals, not just the pressure only scenario of most vehicles. Either of which will activate the oil warning lamp. One is pressure, the other is low oil level, considering there is a level sensor bolted to the side of the sump.

Nah, I check the level frequently - in the garage in the morning, the oil has settled nicely. Partly to check level, partly to admire the very nice GTI engine bay

i check my oil weekly but i think that is in built in me being a forklift mechanic. I was told by a vw service manager that in the first 12-15000km they will use oil mainly due to the way their emission control is set up. He also said the gti has 2 oil warning lights the first being orange which means low oil the second being red meaning low oil pressure. Thats what i was told hope that helps

I'm not sure about Golfs but Subarus have cronic oil consumption problems when new and up to about 25,000km. It's not uncommon for them to use 1L/1000km. Subaru even supply a set of dipstick wipes & a 1L bottle of top-up oil on delivery & the salesperson is supposed to explain that 500km oil-level checks by the owner are mandatory.

To the OP: I was expecting the 1.8TSI engine in my Skoda to use oil initially, but it hasn't used anything in 3000km. 80% of my driving is on the motorway doing 80-110kmh if that's any help.

I honestly think they use a bit much. But hey. What do you do. Top it up...

My 200k km old RB20DET which has copped almost double the stardard boost its whole life doesn't use one drop. I just find it annoying that the sales people tell you 'its turbo they use oil'. Its almost like the feel compelled to lie even when they don't need to.

Mine used about 100ml of oil in 1200km (or 1000km...i cant remember). Its now got 1800km on it and the oil level has dropped just below full. I am monitoring it.

I expect a motor to use oil. Infact I worry when they don't as it indicates something else is being added (bad).

But yeh, mine's not using anywhere near as much as some of you guys.

I reckon its got to do with how they are broken in.

Mine saw revs in the high end of the tacho and lots of loading up of the engine. A few times it also saw into the red (took a while to get used to the rev happy nature and automatic compared to my old diesel patrol).

I was a bit worried about my break-in methods but it sounds like they worked a charm.
