Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Looking to buy R32 - Advice?

Has been a few years since I sold my beloved TDI and the golf bug is twitching again. This time I'm looking at what was just a dream for me all those years ago...the mighty R32. Soooo, a few questions for the R32 clan on here.

Reliability? Anything to be wary of or look for now that these beasts are 10 years old.

    What's considered high mileage/should I avoid anything over 180K?

Real world running costs/fuel consumption etc.

Pm me or answers here (not sure if any of the long time members still frequent this place).
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

I own a low k mkv. You can still get plenty mkv with under 100k. Are you after a mk4 or mkv?

What I found on mine were the typical things that happen to mkv platform (sagging roof liner, lca bushes, water pump) but thats with the age and full service history.

Major item for me was the steering rack (common in mkv) and tension idler pulleys. I sourced the parts but labour was a bitch

Fuel consumption. I average 9l on fwy and 11-13 around suburbs.

In the end if you after the noise great you can't beat it. If you are after speed and quick point to point don't bother it's a money pit unless you have 15-20k for a turbo kit. For me it drives okay through the corners but I drove one with kW kit and I'm set on this, it really transforms the car.

This is as one reviewer said a gentlemans hot hatch. Hope that helps

      I Just picked up a 2008 R32 (last night).... I love it.
Before this i had a 147KW Eos with the DSG and before that i had a 3 door Manual MkV GTI. But i REALLY wanted that 'noise'

I understand mine is the only Tornado Red, 3 door, Manual R32 in Australia?
First thing i did when i got her in the garage at 11:30pm last night - was the Exhaust valve mod.

I am currently at work - desperate to finish so that i can get home and start detailing her ready for the weekend (I will head over to the 'South Australia' area of the forum in a moment, and see if there are any meets or drives planned for this weekend.

thx for the replies thus far.
Am looking at MK5 R32, preferably 3 door.
Also considering MK6 GTI but hesitant due to the timing chain stories I've been reading about.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....
