It should always be cleaned and new moly grease applied.

I just had my two outer boots done last week for $180 per side as part of a service. I noticed the passenger side had split a bit like the first picture, but nothing like as much dirt around it. No idea how long it had been split. They inspected the joint and were satisfied there was no wear requiring replacement. Joints are still quiet. 145k kms TDI manual.

Absolutely. When I replaced a boot on my T4, the grease had started to flick out. After I had removed the boot the grease looked good but knew I needed to clean out the whole joint [very dirty messy job]. As soon as I cleaned it I couldn't believe the wear as there was no noise from the CV. If I had just put a bit more grease & replaced the boot only, I would soon be pulling it back out again. There is a picture in this link.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

You have to swivel it out.

The T4 was designed in the late 80s & first built in 1990. The design has evolved over the years & VW thought of keeping the grease close to the CV joint. The T4 has a cork gasket to keep the grease inside.
