Does the spare key with a Jetta have remote unlock function?

Quick question: do both sets of keys included with a new Jetta have the remote lock/unlock feature, or is the spare key just a regular old key without the remote functionality? Wondering if I need to order an additional remote unlock key from the dealer.

yes. they should both have the remotes on them. ours did.

When I picked up my VW, the dealer told me to swap the keys over monthly due to issues if one key sits idle for long periods that the remote may stop working and require re-programming. Are you hitting the remote buttons and nothing is happening? Perhaps that's the problem...?

No problem as yet...our Jetta is about 2 weeks away from delivery! I was just wondering if I needed to buy an extra key with remote functionality, as the last car we had (a Peugeot) only came with one remote key and the spare was a plain old key. Both remote keys will be getting regular use so sitting idle shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the tip though.

I think this is urban myth (VAG sub-section) #12,342

Unless the car's ECU is re-programmed or the remote's battery goes flat there is simply no reason for the remote not to work after a long period of not being used. The ECU won't "forget" a remote just becuse it hasn't been used for 6 (or 12) months. I tried one of my spare remotes the other day, after 16 months (or more) of not being used and it worked fine.

But if you are ever adding a new key to your car, remember to take ALL your keys in at the same time, as the VAG system wipes the slate clean so to speak, and your car will then only recognise the keys that were programmed by the dealer at that time. If you leave a spare at home it will start the engine, but after a couple of seconds the engine will stop and the key under the car (immobiliser) error symbol will be displayed.

Which colour combination have you chosen.
You will absorlutly love the Jetta,most owners are very enthusiastic about them.
Will yours be a South African,or Mexican produced model.

We ordered a manual Jetta 2.0 TDI with anthracite leather interior, fog lights and black paint. I know that black cars are impossible to keep clean, but IMHO the Jetta looks great in black. Also I realise that a lot people say the 2.0L diesel engine is a great match with the DSG transmission, but I'm a die-hard manual driver and actually enjoy changing my own gears the old fashioned way Not sure of the country of origin, from what I have read it will most likely be South African. Called the leasing company today and apparently it is just off the boat in Brisbane somewhere and is awaiting transport down to Sydney. Should be roughly two weeks from today. Can't wait.

I thought production of Jettas had shifted from Mexico to South Africa already. Country of origin doesn't worry me, as long as it's well screwed together. Good to hear stories from happy TDI owners...this is my first diesel...really looking forward to it.

Not sure that is correct, I'm pretty certain that Aust Jettas are now put together in SA. Mine is Mexican built and the quality is great, I doubt that there will be any difference in SA build quality.

It turned up yesterday (25th)...and I f****** love it! Did about 100km last night around and about Sydney getting a feel for it. Love the grunty TDI surge you get in 2nd/3rd/4th gear in the midrange, was difficult to not drive like a lunatic, and I'll have to keep a close eye on the speedo, because it's mighty easy to be doing 20 or 30km/h faster than you think you're doing...it just keeps pulling. The best part was that even after my rigorous "running in" schedule, the trip computer was reporting 7.4L/100km. Excellent.

Very impressed with the interior quality, leather looks great. Still discovering the little details everywhere in the cabin and the attention to detail. No rattles or squeaks as far as I can tell over the first 100km. Quite a step up from our old Peugeot 206 (although I'll always have a soft spot for it). Will try and take a few photos over the weekend. Thanks everyone for the advice, there's a stack of useful information on this site.

BTW, it's a South African built Jetta, rather than Mexican.
