  • MK4 clutch - options/advice...

    hi guys

    i absolutely smashed my clutch on friday night (clutch pedal stuck to the floor) so its time to start looking at replacement options

    after some advice on which option is the best for my application/budget

    although the car is standard at the moment i will eventually look into some minor mods such as ECU, intake etc so i need something which will hold up to a tad more boost than standard

    from my little research so far i only can find standard replacements which im scared i will only fry again once a reflash is done. have to remember that its is still my daily driver, so for one the car wont be driven hard very often, and two, i dont want it super heavy duty style as id learn to hate it in peak hour traffic etc

    a heads up would be great on available kits, pricing etc

    First place I usually look for parts like that is ECS, with the exchange rate like it is the prices aren't bad even with shipping. The first kit on the list looks pretty good. How hard have you abused the clutch because I've been surprised at how durable the stock one actually is, considering my car is reasonably toey (though I don't do burnouts).

      Id say check the pedal lever first , sounds like thats snapped !

        Bug-racer - you sure the slave cylinder did not go on the box? that will provide the same symptom.

        As for clutch replacement, you really cannot get anything better for feel comfort and driveability than the Eurospec G60/VR6 clutch kit with single piece 12.4KG flywheel. I might actually have a 9.8kg flywheel will confirm and comback on this.

        the clutch is lighter than anything i have ever driven, on the flat you do not even have to apply gas to pull away, and best off all you can go to a near standstill and still cruise along with out applying the clutch.

        But is super strong, been in my car for around 25000kms still feel the same as the day is was installed. You really cannot get anything better.
        And is rated at 450hp.
        Sweet.

          They generally leak fluid as well , he hasnt mentioned oil stains on the ground

            I would change it for a conventinal flywheel and vr6 clutch too. Get away from the dual mass nonsense.

              Don't go buying a clutch before you diagnose it properly. This is far more likely to be a pedal or hydraulics issue than the clutch itself.

              I have a slave cylinder which is brand new in my shed, if that has gone

              The pedals seem to break pretty often too like Seb says.

                Clutch Master cylinders are bad too ( fluid on the floor) And yeah gotta agree with the pedal snap situation. If the Big spring/ring that is part of the pressure plate snaps this too can happen seen it many times but another sympton with this is no drive as you lose spring pressure. So although you have a pedal on the floor you should be able to start up in gear and take off , this will tell you the clamping force of the pressure plate is good and the clutch plate is good.

                  what sort of price are we talking for a clutch kit such as this?

                    Jump on ECS tuning website. Go through as if you are purchasing it and it will give you a shipping quote also

                      yher definitely will have a look at it before i start spending away

                      ill probably look at fixing it with a mechanic friend, so hopefully we will be able to see what needs doing once everything is apart

                      bit scary though, im not too sure what the best thing to do is with sourcing parts, dont really know much about clutches apart from the basics unfortunatley... also made worse by the different setups between the early MK4's like mine and the later models

                      hence me asking for a heads up from people with past experience...

                        over here in NZ the cltuch kit cost me $1895+GST just for the clutch kit.
                        But TBH i will never go any other clutch kit on a 1.8t or vr6 ever again.

                        I have a Sachs kit with SMF on the girlfriends car, it feels just like stock, Spongy and heavy and yucky. So much so that i do not drive her 1.8T at all even thou it's quite a bit faster than my 1.8T

                          Did you get a Preloquin diff with that as well?

                            Just for info, you need to do your homework about lightened flywheels if you are considering that, as apparently they can make a lot of chattering/rattling noise at idle, in neutral. The 20.5 lb clutch kit on the ECS link I gave you would be a safe bet I'd say, as you get the 228mm heavy duty clamp force and they claim absolutely no weird noises and stock feel. These are just suggestions, as others have pointed out, you really need to do your own homework and make sure you even need a clutch.

                              I Would advise to stick with a standard clutch even more so if you are looking at increasing the Hp, I wolud rater break the clutch than break the gearbox
