  • Power steering oil

    Hi all,

when i bought the golf a month or so ago, it was noted in the RACV test that the power steering fluid level was low. I was a bit suspicious as to why, but not knowing a whole lot about "rack and pinion" steering, i didn't much of it other than it needing a top up.

Now, the ..t's at the car yard i bought it from (with a statutory warranty) are giving me real hassles about warranty claims. It's already been back twice!!!!! Anyway, there is no fluid on the ground, the undertray, no weeps from the pipes, resevoir or steering pump so buggered if i know where it's gone!!!! Could it just be that the mechanic is a lazy p..k and didn't top it up? after all, the service he did on it consisted of changing the oil and filter, that's it! no spark plugs, didn't check the air filter, let alone clean it!

What kind of p/s fluid should I use? would the standard castrol or nulon stuff be ok? I have 5 litres of the stuff as a mate works at toyota and my previous car had a decent p/s leak

What's the rating on it though? Could it be "burning off" due to incorrect fluid being used?

Quite often find they dont leak but need a little top up occasionally.
genuine fluid is around $14 per litre

It may be leaking past the seals and into the Rack End/Tie Rod boots, and pooling in there, but not leaking past the boot clamps. Also, look at all of your connections from the power steering reservoir to the pump, then to the rack, and then the return line...It may be leaking in places but, not dropping onto the floor pan or the ground.
So long as the car isn't under the manufacturers warranty, you should be fine to use any brand of power steering/automatic transmission fluid like Dexetron 8.
