  • Potential Clutch Issues

    Hey guys,

I have recently purchased a 2002 GTI Golf 1.8 turbo and am experiencing some minor clutch slipping (I think) If i down change quickly and get on the loud pedal straight away it will increase RPMs to 6k onwards if i let it without speed increasing that much at all and also if im full throttle up a hill in 5th gear putting a lot of torque through it. The car has only done 148k and the previous owner was actually a very honest bloke with everything but is very confident that he never had clutch issues.
Is there some sort of electronic disengagement or something weird and magical that could be causing this or is it safe to say that my clutch is on its way out / already done for?
I have purchased a OBDII reader and got some software already on my laptop to see if anything else weird pops up but hoping its not a clutch, if so then I guess I'll be getting a new one for the Stage 1 upgrade in the new future.

    Thanks fellas!

There is nothing magical about mk4 golf GTI gearboxes. Your clutch is worn. Actually that's an understatement, if its slipping with stock power is beyond whipped haha.

Let me guess, the guy was selling his grandma's car that she drove every Sunday to church?

Haha not quite, it was his car and he drove it to work. But its in perfect condition even the paint work but yeh id assume since he never drove it hard he probably didn't know that the clutch was on its way out so can't blame him. Do you recommend any clutches? I was looking at Stage 1 or Stage 2 Spec clutches

Not sure yet mate, that's what I'm trying to figure out but I was going to go with one of those Spec clutches, I don't want any full on power just around 200hp something to give it a better punch but no point getting the tune yet if my clutch is rooted

I'm fairly certain Camden GTI in NSW sell kits and they actually use the proper oem forged flywheels and shave off some weight.

Possibly eBay? If your happy with non oem flywheel. I have non oem in my car and it's more than acceptable.

                  Thanks for that mate
Still in the UK unfortunately but seems theres not much we can do about that as there is a very small market here in Australia for golfs.
