Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    Fans on high when AC on

    Hi all,

    I've done a lot of work lately on my car including;
    New thermostat and housing
    New temp sensor
    Crack pipe
    New radiator
    New fan switch
    New oil cooler
    Several radiator flushes
    Fan resistor mod

    All genuine parts.

    The issue is that when my AC goes on, so do the fans, except they are on high (I can hear them clearly in the car when driving). They start at low speed very briefly when AC is turned on but go to high very quickly and then stay there.

    What can I check? I double checked my resistor wiring today and added some joiners to test cross connection but that made no difference.

    I'd love and opinions or ideas. I'm scared of burning out the fans.

    Not sure about the Bora but in the turbo models, there is a switch, that looks like this. On the beetle it's located at a 3 way join of the upper radiator hose and two smaller hoses. If you have it, unplug it and if the fans go off, that's the problem. Hope it helps, good luck with it!

      Yeah, thats the temp sensor that is in my thermostat housing. Its a bastard of a thing to reach, I'll give it a go though.

        For those interested, I did some reading and searching and I found this.

        As soon as I read it, it made sense as my coolant was an inch higher than the marker (I paid no attention to it.) I removed that extra inch worth last night and on my drive in today the fans were perfect.

        So, if you get this problem, the easiest thing to check is your coolant level.

          great info mate. If it wasn't for your threads i would have just thought the a/c system was for "comfort only"...
