Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New second hand mk4 1.8t - unusual ignition coils

Hi guys! I have recently upgraded my 2.0 to a 1.8t. very happy so far, the car is essentially stock in every way, carefully maintained by a early 30's woman who treated it with respect and ignorance. she took it to reputable mechanics without fail.

I have noticed however there are some strange ignition coils on it.

I think they are from an audi A6. I dont have a problem with that, but a friend set me up with some coils from an R8 and what are apparently "OEM adaptor plates" for the slightly longer coils.

this is where i find my problem. the coils stick out further than the adaptor plates and the adaptor plates dont fit. this makes me question what is going on here??? could someone help? in what ways is my 1.8t NON STANDARD? why did they choose to use these A6 coils instead of the R8 which is what are so popular?

Not only this, but there appears to be some oil coming up out past the spark plug. that does not seem right at all.

could you offer me some advice? whats going on?

    You've a lot to learn young Jedi/

Those are the std coilpacks for the mk4 GTI with AGU engine.

Please dont waste time and money converting to the R8 coilpacks, it won't make any difference to the way it runs. Even with a tune, the weak point in the ignition is the ignition control module on the airbox.

You can buy conversion looms but it's not cheap.

The oil in the plug hole is unlikely to be coming up. It will be the cam cover gasket leaking.

Thankyou! is it unusual to find the 1.8t AGU engine in a 2003 mk4?
I guess Ill do some searching but its good to know, i feel like i'm getting somewhere.
        so its a 2003 1.8t AGU engine.
with a leaky cam cover gasket.

do you think I should replace the cam cover gasket?
What can you tell me about the AGU variant compared to the other 1.8t's?

        is this accurate?:
        1.8 R4 20vT

110 kW (150 PS; 148 bhp) @ 5,800 rpm; 220 N·m (162 lbf·ft) @ 2,200-4,200 rpm — AEB, AGU, AJH, APH, ARX, ARZ, ATW, AUM, AVC, AWD, AWL, AWT, AWW, BJX, BKF, BKVVW Polo GTI, VW Golf Mk4 GTI, VW Bora, VW New Beetle, VW Passat B5 and VW Sagitar. Also on the Audi TT Mk1 (8N), Audi A3 (first gen.), Audi A4, Audi A6, Škoda Octavia, Škoda Superb (first gen.) and SEAT Ibiza.

        EVEN THOUGH:

        1998-2001 I4 20V AGU/ARZ/ARX/AUM 1781 cc 110 kW (150 PS; 148 hp) @ 5500 rpm 210 N·m (150 lb·ft) @ 2200–4200 rpm
        2001-2006 I4 20V AUQ/AWP/AWW/AGU 1781 cc 132 kW (179 PS; 177 hp) @ 5500 rpm 235 N·m (173 lb·ft) @ 1950–4700 rpm
my car would fall under the 132kW age bracket?

All Mk4 GTI in Australia were delivered with the Audi 20V AGU engine.

In different markets different versions of engines were installed in many different models.

In Australia some engines fitted to Audi were similar, with a mix of larger turbos or multiple turbos and also variable timing.

Your engine in the 110Kw version, an ecu tune would bring it to around 150kw.

I guess I'm surprised, I assumed they stopped using the AGU engines in 2001, but I guess its right there, in my 2003. thats quite disappointing but really I should have known.

Audi stopped in 2001 , VW used the same engine and ECU up until the last batch that came from SA in 2005

                  yes, I see that now
when vw shifted to the 5th generation I remember seeing a LOT more veedubs on the road. so maybe with the success of the fifth generation vehicles, maybe they were less inclined to keep pushing the mk4's? purely speculation here, I just remember the 5th generation seemed to really hit the consumers. but I cant find any hard evidence of that.

god, its great finding out how much I don't know.

                  on a separate note:

I think a wheel bearing or CV joint or boot is going... and my clutch is entering into dire times,
and I think my cam cover's gasket maybe leaking slightly
I rate the clutch pretty high on my list because at this stage when i'm getting moving and i'm slipping the clutch, there seems to be a vibration as if the flywheel was warped. after 1st gear though I don't really have any issues other than slipping if i accelerate too hard.
ill be trying to track down a solid flywheel and a VR6 clutch which was recommended to me.

where do you normally find those parts?

Should I make a thread for my car specifically at this point? would that be useful?

ECStuning for the clutch kit inc flywheel. Or ebay. Bug Racer may keep them too pretty sure he is an ECS reseller.

Your's is def 110kw. I haven' seen a 132kw AGU. If VW change the output the engine code changes too. BJX Polo GTI is 110kw, the Cup Edition which is the same under the bonnet except for the ECU has a different engine code. that wiki entry is wrong.

do you think you could help me out with some code stuff?

my plan will be the standard,
after the clutch, ill also replace the noise offending CV boot, or If I can diagnose it the wheel bearing...
(I hear if you jack up the front of the car and run it in 5th you can identify any bearing or whatever issues by sound)

3" or 2.5" DP (I haven't decided, I really want to keep it as smooth as I can, not boomy)
                      a 2.5" catback
Ive bought a high flow air filter from K&N for the airbox, I wont go CAI because I heard its not useful with the turbo, plus again, trying to keep the sound on the Downlow.
At this stage I will replace the cam cover gasket, and plugs, in fact Ill probably do a nice service on her.
                      then a frontmount.

Ill also want to do what i can to minimise the squeeking and creaking of the chassis and suspension, not a big deal, infact i grew accustomed to the creaking bushings in my 2.0. I guess its one of the loveable quirks of mk4's

Should I make a thread for my car specifically at this point? would that be useful?
