Some of your suspension bushes may be on the way out, causing the sound. The rubber bushing may have worn out to a point that you have a metal on metal sound. You best bet is to rock the car and narrow down to where the sound is comming from, then work out what needs to be changed/replaced."If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."

yeah i notice it on an incline as well. Sounds to be coming from the rear and it does sound metal on metal but i noticed under the bonnet the strut caps are well lifted from the strut tower indicating the strut bushes are stuffed. so might look at replacing all the bushes soon.
Apart from the struts and control arms what are the bushes should be replaced while I'm at it?1999 Golf GTi - SOLD

creaky suspension
If it is coming from the rear, it is possibly the handbrake (no not your wife or g/f either). If there is the slightest of movement when you get in or out of the car, the wheels can sometimes move just enough to get a creaking sound where the disc moves against the brake pads. It is only the tinyest of movement that causes the squeek/creak.

Thats what it absolutely is guys just the handbrake , not bushes or anything wrong there they all do it , all marks. When i was in the dealership it wasnt uncommon to have on the repair order to check creak from rear during egress. No fix , characteristic. More than Vw do it. Nothing to worry about
