Pioneer Headunit install

Hi Guys,

I just got a pioneer DEH-X4850 BT head unit from JB hifi.

What Pioneer - ISO adaptor do I need?

I have a VW Golf MK4 2003 sport 2.0L model.

Do I need to disconnect battery before installing new head unit?

And any antenna adaptors required?

Hey there! For that model you won't need any ISO adaptor. Just recently installed a Kenwood unit and just needed an antenna adaptor. Easy and donde in 15 minutes

You mean pull out the existing VW eurovox headunit and plug in the pioneer? Plug and play? What antenna adaptor do I need?

Head to your local autobarn and get them to help you out with the antenna adaptor. The aftermarket head unit's antenna connection is different to the one in your car. It's around $10-15 to buy and looks like a bullet.

Also do I need to disconnect car battery before installation?

And to confirm I don't require a harness as the VW golf 4 already had the plugs ready to go? Ie just remove eurovox adaptor on the VW stock unit?

Yes, always disconnect the battery when working with car electronics for any number of reasons.


With regards to the harnesses - if you dont want to cut up factory wires (which I wouldn't really recommend both because you need to know how to solder well and it's a huge waste of time) you will need an adaptor like this that connects your pioneer head unit wiring to a standard ISO connector.
To better explain what's going on here:
Your pioneer unit will come with a standard pioneer harness with loose wires - that looks like this. The manual will tell you what each of the wires do. The colours are standard for any aftermarket unit.
Obviously for the unit to work in your car those wires need to link up car's wiring, which you will find is different in all cars compared to that of the aftermarket headunit's colouring and plug. How you do this differs from both car-to-car and installer. Most cars have own propriety audio harness/connector (e.g. this is a traditional audio harness that mitsubishi's have) and so you need to link the two together. You can do this by cutting the right wires and then soldering it on, but this is over-the-top and takes a lot of time to do plus you need to sus out which wire is what. What most people do these days is use "ISO" connectors which are mostly "plug in and play". For this normally would need two harnesses - one to convert the aftermarket headunit to the iso standard (e.g. Pioneer to ISO harness) and then an ISO connector the car in question. However in the case of the VW, it's propriety audio harness is the ISO connector so you only need the one.

Hope that isn't too hard to understand.

Top tips:
1) Cross the red and yellow wires on the pioneer-to-ISO connector - so your headunit will run while the key is in ACC mode
2) Don't use factory earth (black wire). Wire in your own. Connect the earth to a exposed metal. I used a bolt near the passenger door (remove panel).
3) The rear of the radio housing will likely need to be cut up to properly fit the unit. Have a dremel/soldering iron/cutters ready.
4) Buy a few spare fuses incase you short circuit one

When I removed the stock VW single CD player the bracket stays in the dash. Is this normal or should it comes out attached with the player?

If it's not meant to come out together how do I remove the bracket? As I want to fit the pioneer headunit with the supplied bracket? As when I try to insert the pioneer headunit with the stock VW bracket it does not lock into place.

Pioneer Headunit install

Use a small screw driver to lift any tabs that are pressed in and then slide it out. You can straighten the tabs out once you remove it.

Then slide in your pioneer bracket and push out the tabs on each side to secure it.

Put the the screw and rubber knob of the original unit on the back of the pioneer, connect wires and slide it in.

Pull out the pocket from above the radio. Gives a 2DIN opening, and much better access. Then lift up any tabs and you will be able to lift out that bracket no worries.

Thanks for the info guys. What screw are you referring to? Also the original rubber that came with the VW headunit I can't use it on the pioneer as there is nothing on th eback of the pioneer that lets me plug it in.

Also re the tray above radio, do I just pull it out with force?

Take off the rubber knob on the back, unscrew the gold thread with an Allen key in the centre. Attach it to the back of the Pioneer. Not sure on the tray, but do not force it. YouTube might help.

ok thanks. What is the rubber used for? Is it essential to use it?

It supports the back of the radio, I would use it but it's up to you.
