  • Neuspeed/Eurocustoms FMIC thoughts.. possible group buy

Intercooler options for the 1.8t... what a nightmare of a decision.

I have been researching possible intercooler kits for a looong time now. I have asked on here many times, and have received great advice and options from both Gav and KenDog.

What I was looking for in an intercooler:

    1. Proven results
    2. Easy fit
    2. Minimal trimming of front bumper.
    3. Zero trimming of crash bar.
    4. Front Black vents to be able to be reinstalled if required with no trimming.
    5. Fair price

I think I have decided on ordering the Neuspeed/EuroCustoms style intercooler. So ill show you what I have found and see if anyone else is interested in the kit.

The kit on first impressions looks like it has alot of piping. But I really dont think it has that much more than other intercooler kits that have piping that go up and over the engine to the turbo.

Here is a quality thread on VWvortex showing test results of the Eurocustoms FMIC (It Works):
VWVortex.com - Product Review: Euro Customs $450 FMIC kit for MKIV

Here is the original Neuspeed kit... so expensive
    http://www.neuspeed.com/481090-fmic-golf-iv-jetta-iv-18t.html

Eurosport came out with a copy. which they dont sell anymore. This is a For Sale thread with good pictures.
VWVortex.com - EuroCustoms Front Mount Intercooler Kit

But I have found a supplier on Aliexpress that sells an identical looking kit. I would bet money on the EuroCustoms being a basic bar/plate intercooler just like the one provided from Aliexpress.

This is where I am thinking of ordering from:
03 05 GOLF JETTA MK IV 1.8T (NEUSPEED) Intercooler kit-in Cooling System from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

    Core size:
    550*140*65

    Cost:
    $380AUD delivered for 1 kit (approx $190 for intercooler/ $190 for shipping)
Obviously if other people are interested in this kit, The cost of shipping becomes cheaper, and if we have 10 people the cost of the intercooler reduces aswell.

    Colour options:
Silicon colours are no problem (Blue, black etc). The supplier also told me that if enough people are interested, they can produce the entire kit in black if wanted. Or even black pipes, silver intercooler. etc.

I have emailed the supplier, and they have told me basically 'What you see is what you get'. But I will be pushing for pictures of the core and bar/plate design before ordering.

    Conclusion:
It may not be a WellyCooler with 2.5" pipes for maximum dyno figures, or the THS/OCD twinpass for the shortest pipe runs, but the kit is easy to install, drops temps, affordable.

If anyone else is interested here, express your interest here in this thread.

    I'm interested!
I was looking at a similar fmic on aliexpress for about $350 shipped but didn't have a decent brand name to go with it
So this looks a lot better

In an ideal world we live in the same suburb haha.... Makes shipping easier, I'll talk to the supplier and see if all parcels just go to one person to get the best postage deal.

Only thing with that is if it goes to one person then the rest of us will need to pay postage again from where they are delivered to
Being that im from sa, if savings arent going to be enough id probably be better off purchasing myself.
Considering you're on the gold coast, id assume postage of that would be about $30-50 on top of the original purchase price for the intercooler

I agree with what your saying caputo, I'll evaluate all options before going ahead.

Dubster, they do sell the pipe kits separately.

                    Guys, just some more updates:

Minimum of 5 people need to want black kits for the workshop to consider it worthwhile.

The intercooler and pipes will be powder coated black.

They are sending me a brochure to show the internal fin design options of the intercooler. I will post a link once it arrives.

I am also in talks with other workshops to get the best price.

Commenced a list of interested people under the first post.

Anyone know of the cheapest way to courier things around Australia? I have a feeling all the intercoolers will arrive in one big batch. Well over a 100kg with 10 kits. Might need to start talking with a freight forwarding company to get the lowest shipping price instead of DHL.

                    More updates to come.

would this be suitable for an audi s3 '02? or would the piping be incompatible?

Throttle body is on the other side on an S3 and I doubt the FMIC would be a great deal of an improvement over the sidemounts.

Go back in the Audi Quarter and look at my S3 intercooler fit.

I'm also interested. I guess it all depends on the amount of discount and cost of further shipping to Perth.
Thanks for doing all the work chief!

                            Update:

The following core structures are available:

Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

Note: bar and plate options are an additional $15AUD.

                            Additional Information:

                            Tube and Fin

                            Pros:
Generally weighs about half as much as a bar and plate core of similar dimensions
                            Generally less expensive
Generally less flow restriction within the core than bar and plate designs
Less flow restriction through the exterior allowing better flow to the rear of the core and to a radiator, AC condenser, tranny or oil cooler, etc. which may be behind it

                            Cons:
Those with less flow restriction than bar and plate cores offer less heat rejection
Generally have more fins which means they're more likely to be damaged by rocks/debris which cuts down on cooling efficiency
Charge air entry extends beyond core wall making it more difficult for air to enter the core cleanly

                            Bar and Plate

                            Pros:
Generally offer greater heat rejection than tube and fin design
Those with turbulators offer even greater heat rejection
Offered in tons of varying shapes and sizes
Less likely to be damaged by rocks and debris
Charge air entry sits flush with core allowing for cleaner entry

                            Cons:*
Weighs about twice as much as a similarly size tube and fin core
                            More expensive
Blocks more airflow to radiators, etc. which may be behind it
Those with turbulators have greater flow resistance to charge air

Turbulators are curved pieces of sheet metal seen on both the inside and outside of intercooler cores between the fins. They do much to increase drag, but much more too increase heat transfer. Their job is to separate the air charge (as well as the cooling medium) into even smaller units, forcing virtually all of the two fluids to do their part in heat exchange. The more turbulators there are, the better the heat exchange, but the greater the flow restriction as well. Therefore, in an application with lots of internal flow area, more turbulators can be reasonably employed, while in an application with less internal flow area the reverse is the case.

Remember that there's a balancing act between cooling and airflow restriction within the core. The more densely packed turbulators are within a bar and plate core the more cooling will be done as the air passes through, but the greater flow is restricted.

There are many crappy cores for sale on Ebay and they are now becoming a common item at so called performance shops. In the product images they show the cores and you can see right down them because there are no turbulators present. Without these all you have is big chunk of metal with poor cooling. People are always saying the ebay ICs flow great. Sure they do, straight pipes with no restrictions do flow nicely.

                              Need Gavs expert opinion

Gav what do you think of this intercooler?

Also, since the size of the intercooler is smaller than the wellycooler, which core do you think would be optimal?

I'll favoring the bar and plate double fin due to better heat dispersion, but would the core be working our little turbo overtime to maintain requested psi due to additional pressure?
