  • Mk 4 rough starts and lumpy idle PLZ HLP

    Car: 1.6L Man

Problem: 1.Rough start in the morning and lumpy idle- then OK after 5 min

2.Flat spot in power ( i think its the MAF)

Apart from Vag Com check, anyone got any suggestions on things i should look at or replace?

    Thanks in advance
    Mick

You may possibly have a air leak. Have a look for any split or broken pipes. Have you done any mods recently?

Does that conect after the MAF or before it?

If it replaced the pipe after the MAF, it may be loose letting un-filtered (and un-meterd) air in. That would give you the symptoms you have now...

It would be worth while to suss it out.

Otherwise, disconect the MAF and see if it goes away. If it does you have a MAF that is returning a bad reading.

Do a visual for obvious stuff and then you really need to run a scan. Also measured vale blocks - block 03 will check for unmetered air. There is a Vac pipe that comes adrift on the intake elbow near the cyl head and having said that the intake elbows are notorious for splitting and can go unseen unless pressed as it is a concertina, when accelarating the split opens up.
          Good luck

            Here is a pick..

As it shows, air is first FILTERED then MEASURED before entering the engine and the last time i diconnected the MAF, the car wouldnt start at all.
Anyone know how effective the eBay cables are for checking faults?
ALSO, anyone heard the theory that if you change the length of pipe from air flow meter MAF to throttle on a standard car, it could cause problems?
            Cheers

Sometimes the coolant temp sensor (G62) can cause this problem on cold start have you had the car scanned?
