When I did mine I needed new bolts in the diff, a new 1st gear, a syncro and some seals.
But the kicker was the 6 weeks for a new plastic speedo gear.
A rebuilt box is probably the best option for longevity or an original from a wrecker if you are just going to sell it off.

Or to tell me that the problem with my speedo not working is exactly what i told him i thought the problem was when i took it there on Monday..... because it apparently took him 3 hours to connect to my ECU to figure out that the problem actually is in the gearbox

My mechanic said it took 5min to work it out. As soon as he dumped the gearbox oil he saw a rivet head in the pan.
I usually get charged $20 for the scan, but nothing would come up for the gearbox issue.
My mistake was to have it rebuilt in house, I should've just got a reco box, would have been quicker and maybe a little cheaper.
A 2nd hand non reco box, still sporting the silly rivets, should be a lot cheaper option.MK4 GTI - Sold
