      ^That.

If it's not a VW radio, unplug it.

In case you're wondering why the two answers so far mention the radio, check out this link which gives you an understanding of why it could be the issue:

        Ross-Tech: VCDS: Afterrmarket Radio Problem

"Trouble is, some of the aftermarket harnesses faithfully reproduces the older, non-diagnostics radios with a loop of wire between +12 and the pin where the K-line is on newer models. So you install your fancy new radio with one of these and everything works fine until.. somebody plugs in a scan tool."

          Sorry didn't see ur replies!
Yes it's an aftermarket audio unit, I've read something about this k-line, but the VCDS cable worked when the mechanic scanned my car!
I'll read the link before I ask any more questions
          Thanx guys

Annoyingly the same thing happened to me. Wired the radio myself and everything was fine for months, including using VCDS. Then months later the VCDS wouldn't work. Cut the magic blue wire on the harness adaptor for my aftermarket head unit and all was good again!

Can't get off the damn head unit!!! Look like the previous owner bolted the damn thing! Need to remove the side panels to reach the bolts on the sides

Are you guys sure it is OBD2 compliant? My UltraGauge won't work on my 2011 1,6L either .. so I presumed it was just before official OBD2 spec.

Yes the VAGCOM works but that isn't OBD2 I don't think, it's some VW specific protocol
