  • Mk4 golf loss of power and fans now turn on?

    Hello everyone
Just recently I replaced my thermostat and water pump and now it seems there is a delay when accelerating and I have no idea what it may be.. Any suggestions?

And also since replacing parts my fans turn on for a few minutes when I turn off the car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    P.s it's a mk4 golf 1.6L GL

No idea with your running drama but the fans running on isn't unusual

Ahh okay I just wasn't sure about the fans because I don't remember them running before I had to change the pump.
      Thank you!

Loss of power? Any air leaks at all? Any engine light on? Is the car misfiring?
        PM me if you like.

          Hey techniks,
No air leaks as of yet nor is there any engine lights. Just yesterday it had a problem starting but I got it going after a few goes.
I'm thinking its a fuel leak, might be a faulty fuel sensor cus I've noticed my car smells of fuel a lot.
But like just when I'm going up my driveway and other steep hills I find that I've lost a lot of power and off the mark it's slower acceleration and hills I could previously do in 3rd gear I'll have to do in 1st.

I Intend to go looking sometime tomorrow, hopefully it's just I've bumped a sensor or hose somewhere

            Hello Brandt,
The 2.0l motor has the water pump driven by the cam belt, is the 1.6l the same? You may have inadvertently let the cam timing change when the belt was slack. This would explain hard to start and loss of power and possibly running hotter, therefore having your fan run on after turning off. Not sure about fuel smell. Also, is your new thermostat the same temp as the old one or hotter? This would make a higher running temp and cause fan run on.

              Hey lynnos
It does run off the cam belt but I'm pulling it apart now to have a look and it looks pretty well lined up so far.
Also the new thermostat is 2degrees lower than the previous one so that knocks that out.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep looking

I haven't been in the forum since the above reply but it is good to see you have got somewhere positive.
                  Cheers
