  • Noise/ clunking under car- 99 mk4 GTI HELP!!

    Hey all,
Recently bought a mk4 gti and I absolutely love the thing but it's got some noises coming from under the front of the car and I can't figure it out. Neither can my mechanic.

At first we thought it was the lower control arm bushes as they are well worn and the bushes had huge cracks, so replaced the whole lower control arm on both sides. Noise still there.

My mechanic has been over the whole underneath of the car and tightened everything. Still can't find it.
The only noise we can find is a small noise that appears to be coming from inside the steering rack. Could this be the cause?

I can feel and hear the knock/ clunk when I drive, it can be felt both in the passenger foot well as well as the drivers when I take my foot off the clutch and place it on the floor.

Please help. What am I missing? What could it be?

    Thanks all

    Strut tops bushes or bearings.
    Sway bar bushes or links.
    Control arm bushes.

    Noticable More at slow speeds?

Steering Rack Tie Rod End, Inner Uni's are worn, common problem
They wear out and allow a lot of play, which causes the Knocking noise you are hearing.

when driving where does the sound come from?
I get a clunk that is actually the drivers door hinge, when i spray some WD40 or silicon spray on them it goes away for a while.

swaybar bushes often creak a lot while driving when worn?

could be a dud shock that is knocking about ?

I had excessive noises when turning and when the weight of the body shifted, it was the ball joints. Right side was the worst, had them changed and it is a lot quieter. I still have a small noise on the left side sometimes which has me baffled.

Similar issue in my car, have just replaced the strut rubber tops and no more clunking.

Turned out the left strut was moving side to side as both rubbers had compressed 4-6mm.

              all better now
