  • Bora 4Motion vs R32 specs and some suspension advice?

So I'm a newbie to this forum, though I've had my 03 Bora 4Motion (see attached image of track day at Oran Park) for about a year now.

Have done a few bits and pieces to it since, with a Carbonio CAI and an aborted attempt at doing the suspension (went for H&R springs with Bilsteins, which was way too hard, swapped the Bilsteins for Konis, they bottomed out all the time, so am now back to the original springs with Konis).

So I'm after a bit of advice on how to sharpen up the handling. Does anyone know how the R32 suspension differs from the 4Motion and whether any parts are transferrable, and are worth doing so with?

    Sorry for the multi-layered question!

    thanks

i don't reckon r32 parts would ever come cheaply. if you do a lot of track days would you consider koni/bilstein/branded coilovers? they'd probably provide better road holding than r32 oem parts.

a good deal of the money from coilovers comes from adjustability. if you want it to be a race car one day and a comfy street car the next then i think they're your only option. www.tirerack.com is where id buy from if i were to get coilovers.

I would say before doin anything...take a R32 to a track and drive it! I believe you will trade your bora and buy a R32,beautiful for track work....To do a full conversion of a R32 suspension you would better of buying one....at least 3k+ a corner thats R32 setup!.....parts wise impossible to buy in Australia thats where its goin to cost you.

Thanks all for the advice. JVLR, yeah thats whats stopped me spending too much on the Bora to date, I know the R32 will give me the whole package straight up but am thinking I'll probably keep the Bora for another year or two. I don't do that much track time, maybe once a year at most.

Coilovers seem to be the goods for suspension, thanks for the pointer Mischa, I'll try tirerack and see what it'll cost.

Have seen some posts elsewhere on the Bora's engine or gearbox rear mounts or something (i've probably got the terminology mixed up there) making the steering response a bit soft and people putting in braces or mounts from the TT or R32. Anyone know anything about that? Not sure if there's something worn in my steering box or if Boras are normally a bit vague - much like myself.

          thanks

Australian delivered MkIV R32s came with US spec suspension. While it rides fairly hard and from my experience give decent handling, from what I've heard it doesn't hold a candle to the European spec. Whilst engaging in some spirited driving, I have thought that it could do with some stiffening at the least. My plan is to rip it out at some stage and put some Koni FSDs into the R.

4motion would be a great car with fully overhauled suspension, a little bit more power, 150kg odd loss of luxury and some decent brakes. A "sport" version should have had this but alas, no.

The R32 does all of that but maintains a lard weight.

VW should take a leap out of the EVO / STi book and build something nasty!

i think that's how i'd build my bora... in fact i'm semi-looking for one to do exactly that to..

my future list of mods to a future v6 bora :j - neuspeed sways f + r, bilstein pss9s all round, haldex controller. speaking of which - go have a look at the group buy section for haldex controller. i'd imagine a more rear biased/aggressive set up would improve turn in and neutrality through bends. in fact http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=10721

With regards to making an Bora V6 an R32 there isnt much you can do easily in the engine department but you can tighten the bora up a lot by...

Haldex controller (Awesome modification wouldn't believe how tight she is through the twisties... inspires confidence)
                    Rear Sway-bar
Suspension = KW V3's and I believe this will be way better than an R32 stock
Tyres - Sticky - Remember your tyre pressures should be upwards of 36 PSI for handling (On any tyre, made a world of difference on mine )

This would cost you upwards of 4000 $ but you would have quite a handler, I myself have done two out of four with that being haldex/swaybar and it is good but I think the main thing that holds the R/Bora back is weight so dumping anything you can such as spare-wheel,rear-seats etc will make a big difference !

As I keep saying, the Bora will never be an Nissan R32 GTR but is a comfort/sports tourer and does this very well. I am always astonished at other cars when I haven't driven something other than mine for a while makes me want to keep her ! Even though a B5 S4 calls out to me !

Thanks qsilverza, sounds good to me. Everyone seems to be raving about the Haldex controller, bummer I missed the group buy... Am going to speak to Inmotive next week about the KWs... Will let you know how I go..

I agree, the Bora will never be an R32 (Golf or Skyline!). It is still a smooth cruiser though, which is why I like it!

just remember that kw's are not the be all end all of coilovers. they are one in a market of products and not necessarily better or worse than others. buying them here will make you gulp at the price which is why i suggested a US site. the bilstein pss10's are a comparable product to kw v3's. also dont just buy a rear sway bar, buy front and rear to produce a more neutrally handling car.

Mischa, do you think that these guys would ship tyres internationally? They seem a lot cheaper than what i can find in Perth

lol yeah sorry it was a bit or sarcasim. When I was looking I thought yeah a sport version.. then their was no difference and I didn't want a spoiler anyways...

I got the Bora for the seat warmers, and stealthy looks. Apparently the Bora is the second best used car for crashes in some study done last year, only beaten by the Golf.

Yeah, mines the sport model and I ended up taking the wing off the back, didn't like the look of it at all!

Hey thanks so much all who've given advice on all this, its been really helpful for a newbie like me, so thanks!
