  • Window problem - Help please!

I know this has been described as a common problem and have searched the forums but if anyone can give me some specific direction would be much appreciated.

Was putting down the right passenger window and bloody thing fell through. Now cant get it to come back up. The motor is still working, and makes usual noises when pushing the button.

From what i have been able to gleam its probably the plastic clips.

What is the most cost effective way to fix? If i order clips (read here about $120) and try do it myself or get someone to help me out? Saw a price of $700 mentioned when someone took theres to the dealer and thats ridiculous. Any instructions i can get somewhere?

Anyone not too far willing to help me out for some cash? I am in Hills area of Sydney and work in Parramatta.

Screwed without my car so need to do something asap. Unfortunately mechanical things not my forte.

    Cheers all

I am sure more help is coming. most likely it is the window regulator, it is replaciable. I would advice you to unhook the mechanism and hold it up with a plank of wood for the mean while.

Is this the same thing as the guides/clips? Ok thanks might try that if i can even figure that out as a stop gap.

Car is on the street with plastic on it. Not good obviously.

Like i mentioned you dont need the whole reg , just the repair kit. Not really a job for a novice to be honest, dealer will try and sell you the whole thing which you dont need amnd like VWTECH says the new one is back to good old plastic again. Holding the window up with wood is a complete waste of time as you need the door card off to do so, after all that effort you are there anyway so fit the new parts mate.

At a dealer you'll pay around $300 fitted..If you are able to get the window Glass up, then use Race tape along the inside of the door seal and the glass. Avoid using MASKING TAPE ON THE PAINT it leaves crap behind which is hard to clean off
Thanks mate. $300 sounds alot better then 7. Will see what they say in morning. Fortunately can park in secure park at work for next 2 days so at least wont have to worry about it being down, unless it pisses down rain of course!

                    So rang up Parra VW.

They gave me some spin about having to replace the whole thing, $260 for parts and $425 for labour, total = $685. Absolute jokers these lot.

Bull-****e, I have replaced mine on both doors. We should really petition to VW about this one.

Cost me 120 $ and there is a guide on vwvortex.com on exactly how to do it.

Got a quote from Tooleys imports in Hornsby.

$150 for repair kit and $240 for whole thing including regulator, just parts obviously.

From what people have mentioned i will only need the repair kit?

                          Thanks

Yeah it's piss-poor really, when it's a well known documented manufacturing deficiency. The swap to metal clips in the repair kits basically confirm VW's acknowledgement of the problem, in fact in the US I think VW replace them as needed when they fail.

Pretty sure it's the earlier Mk4's that suffer from this and the last couple of years of the MK4 model had the metal clips from the factory, again confirmation that the plastic wasn't up to the job.

Another problem that happens rather too frequently on our cars is the infamous clutch pedal collapse/breakage.

                              Snowy.
