  • Coilovers/Springs/Cup Kit? What to do?

    Hi Guys,
After a lot of saving i've managed to get the money together to lower my MK4.
Ive looked at cup kits/ springs/coilovers and i'm not too sure what to go for.
My budget is max $500, and im looking at about a 50mm drop.

After going for a quick drive in another MK4 with JOM coilovers i'm a bit hesitant on buying coils.
The ride was rough and you felt every single bump, not to mention it's as low as possible.
I was looking at either JOM Bluelines or FK streetlines and i don't really know what to do.
Are there any other coilover brands for the price?
What do you guys think of FK's compared to JOM's? is the ride quality any better/less harsh?
My other option is springs alone, but then again id have to upgrade my shocks not long after.
Then theres a cup kit. But i cant really find any that are in my price range.

    Thanks in advance.

if you want more comfort I Think from my research you are better off going with a good quality cup kit(springs and shock combo)
like the H&R or Eibach etc.
the JOM or FK are apparently quite rough but then that is what they are built for.. stance yo super lowness and race tracks on an ultra budget as there is no adjustability.
for adjustability of the bound/rebound is what you want to make them a bit softer for our roads (Remember our roads are quite rough)

The JOM and FK's both get good reviews all round but you get what you pay for

With a 50mm drop I wouldnt be just doing springs, will flog your stock struts out super fast.
cup kit isnt far off the price of some ok coils. Generally the more you pay the better. Get some fk or weitec coilovers.
iv been in a mk4 with bilstein coils (no dampening adjustment) and they road so nice even wound right down,

ECS tuning has the koni and H&R spring kit for $450 or so plus freight.. shouldn't be too bad..
can always see if another person will order stuff too and share the freight cost

          Thanks guys.
I think i might steer clear from coilovers considering the harshness. What are fk streetlines like?
I can get both joms and fks for under 400 delivered to my door. But joms just seem too harsh after experiencing them.
Probably be worth saving for a few more weeks and buying a cup kit.
Ive found that the best priced cup kit on ECS is the H&R Sport for $650 to my door.
What are weitec's like dylan? i havent heard much about them.

They are meant to be a 're badged kw, so much cheaper, but same quality supposedly. Havnt been I'm a car with them though from memory.
Look at some of the better fk with dampening adjustability too. They have a number of models.

I have had fk streetlines in my old mk3 and have a set now in my mk5. I think they ride amazing. Very comfortable, firmer than factory but not harsh. Do recommend. If you're on a budget I wouldn't think twice. + I'm sure in the future you might want to play with ride height so might as well get them as coils instead of a cup kit and restricting yourself.

I'm running FK Streetlines with the rears wound all the way down & fronts not far off & my 40yo mother thinks it drives/rides great. you feel the bumps more but it will be like that with any budget coilover. Couldn't recommend them more for the price.

                  Thanks heaps guys,
Im seriously thinking about the fk streetlines. Weitec's sound good but i cant find any that can compare to the price of the fk's.
I would prefer to get coils considering i will more than likely want to go lower. If they're better then JOM's id be happy to get them. I have the money for them so there really isnt anything stopping me other than deciding to get them or not.
Is there anyone else that runs fk's in their mk4 that can comment on them?

Feenie do you have any problems with the driveshaft hitting your sway bar?

Nope no problem with sway bar rub. pretty sure our 1.6's have smaller drive shafts compared to gti's so we can go a little lower

Edit: Theres another guy by the name of "Leighaus" who has fk's for something like 10xxxkm. im sure he'd have something to say about them.
