Did you do REVS check before you bought it ? Missing key is something that's suspicious. Good luck.

I remember some forum member has bought Mk4 remote keyfob from eBay, but you need to take it to dealer to program it.

I didn't think all Aussie Mk4 GTi's came with remote keyless? I bought my 2001 GTi second hand and it came with two normal keys.

Also if you check the specs on redbook for the Mk4's earlier than April 2002, they're not listed with remote/keyless, but april 2002 onwards they are.

Does anyone know the deal? I'd love to get one off eBay or whatever, but suspect it will do bugger all.

Yeah mate, whats your build date?

Mine is a 07/2001 (Built) and it has remote central locking with flip keys x2.
Also has Trip Computer (MFD), Leather Interior, Sunroof, chrome ring around gear shift, 1.8T Engine Cover (not 20 Valve), Aero Wipers the list goes on.

From what Volkswagen have said, cars built in July are the next year model i.e MY02.

The other good way to check is with your VIN Number.
Mine is WVWZZZ1JZ2#######. The 10th digit represents the year, in this case 2002.

As for Redbook it is wrong, I called / emailed them about that yesterday and they said that they would update the listing.
If you look at the Apr 2002 Specs, they are the same as my vehicle, not the 2001 or 2002. Just useless info.

Back to the key though, obviously yours does not have remote central locking via flip keys. Chances are you have the "Garage / Valet" key only.

        Happy to discuss...

didn't want to start another thread but i was wondering

i have my key for the bora, but its a bit banged up and i want the casing for it changed

if i get the case off ebay would it be easy for the dealership to change the key and the casing for the remote key?

          Cheers

So from what I've read, us unfortunate early MK4ers are left with the normal keys... Is there any [reasonably feasible] way to get an OEM flip-key programmed to our's? I don't want to get an aftermarket pad

I have wondered the same thing, Can there be just a module bought, pluged in and away you go with remote flip keys, or is that just wishful thinking?

HI , you used to get a Votex upgrade kit that gave you a remote, worth checking with VW if they can still be supplied, i fitted so many of them its not funny.

There was a company selling a kit in the UK to do that. Plugged inline with the central locking in the footwell. Looked like it was made by Toad IIRC. Was about 100 quid.

Jmac, was the remote separate to the key? Do you remember how much it was worth?

I've tried US/UK eBay without any luck but might try a VW forum from the US/UK. What's a busier overseas VW Golf forum?

Also, a question for you guys with the remotes - do your lights turn on when you unlock the car?

god thats annoying, i think i was looking for this information when i got my car (didint get the flip keys) but didnt get anywhere so ended up getting an aftermarket alarm...

im assuming that this route would be somewhat expensive as you would then have to purchase the actual flip keys? i got quoted $250-300 odd for a replacement of my crappy normall key, hate to think what a flip one is worth...

For those with a VAGCOM or similar and central locking don't select channel 0 in the adaption setting for the Comfort Module (46). It will delete your saved keys for the central locking. You can still use the key to unlock the doors and start the car, the remote just won't work.
Use channel 1 to relearn the keys.
Guess who learnt this the hardway...

My wife’s early Mk4 didn’t have keyless entry. Looked into getting a factory ‘dealer fit’ remote locking and it was about $280 for the parts PLUS installation.
Ended up going for a Cyclops after market version $200 installed. (and they came to me and fitted it)

Thanks for that Syrup. Do you remember if the $280 include a factory flip key? I mainly want that!

Also to those late MKIVers, do the headlights/interior lights turn on when you open the car?

                              Cheers
