Hey guys so as some you know i am in the middle of a 1.6>1.8t conversion. So the mechanics was pretty simple -new timing belt, water pump and clutch with lightened flywheel. All that went in without many hassles.

Parts a swapped from the gti to mine was the keyfob, ignition barrel, ecu and cluster.

So heres the tricky part, the wiring loom that connects into the plenum has 4 plugs (green, orange, white and black) my old 1.6 only had 3 plugs (green, orange and white).

So keys goes in and a whole lot of faults light up. Engine does not even want to start, whining from the throttle module, a click and now a noise the starter motor like its trying to turn but cant for some reason.

So ive spoken to some people and they have said it could be a bad earth but all earth wired and tight. Wonder if the black plug in the plenum which is not connected to anything has anything to so with this. Anyone know what the wires on the plug are for?

Any advice would be awesome guys!

im looking to do the same conversion from my 1.6 8v akl to 1.8t agu how hard was it to change engine out and is there any other issues you have come across? I can see if I can get on auto data and find out what the plug is for, if you like?

Hey mitch, havnt updated this yet as i just moved. So turns out it may be my flywheel stuck in my gearbox so im yet to take off the gearbox. The mechanical side of things was easy, straight fit. Take a look in the section called projects, restoration and conversions. Stan has a very helpful thread on there when he did his.

In all honesty dont do it. Its a good experience but at the same time the way i did mine I ended up nothing paying a cent for my engine and gearbox. Was just my time and new parts i have to bring. Gtis are dirt cheap atm and the only reason for me doing this is the fact i knew nothing about the 1.8t until i came across this forum and id spent way too much on the cosmetics to just sell mine and buy a gti. If your going to do it by all means its your own car and i cant stop you but buy a full wreck for as cheap as you can and part out the wreck to make some $$$ back.

If you have anymore question dont hesitate to ask. And the info on that black plug would be awesome too
