  • New Beetle - holed sump

Just had a call from my daughter and sounds like she's holed the sump on her Beetle (2005 with 1.6 engine)

Apparently she called in at a friends farm on the way home and didn't see a stump hidden in the grass when she parked. Engine started OK but as she pulled out of the driveway the oil light came on followed immediately by the engine light and the engine shut down.
I'm hoping it still had some oil in it and just pumped dry briefly then the ECU shut it down. Can anyone confirm that would by typical behaviour?

She's getting it trayed home so I can take a decent look tonight.
Anyone know if its possible to get the sump off with the engine in the vehicle?

Sump will come off without taking the engine out.

Thanks Gavin. That's a small bit of good news at least.

Thought it might just be cracked, but not the case going by the fact that I can fit half my hand in the hole in the back of it
I'm just hoping that since it was only a driven about 50m before it shutdown that there's no internal damage to bearings etc.

Anyone suggest a source for a replacement sump in Melbourne?
Would other engines have the same sump or are they peculiar to the Beetle?

Sump will be the same as the equivalent motor in a Golf 4. I dare say VW will have them in the warehouse at Derrimut.

If it's already got the level/quality sensor in the sump you're in luck, because that's the only way you can get the sumps now.

Easy enough to swap over, but you'll need to get hold of a long ball-end 6mm Allen key socket to get the bolts out that are hidden up behind the flywheel/flexplate.

Here's a piccy of the damage. Is that the level sensor on the left of the photo?

Yes that is the level sensor, if I remember correctly they have their own O-ring too, advisable to replace that, also do not use too much sump sealant when resealing. De-grease off everything too. Best of luck

              Fair effort.

Sump plug's gone too, so add that to the shopping list as well.

Thanks - I hadn't even noticed that. I was trying to work out why it had torn the piece out like it has, but having the sump plug there might explain it.

Hmmm - if the missing bit is still intact maybe I could just TIG it back in........

They can be fun to weld on the mk4s.
                  Nice effort!

Fun in what way? Thin/porous ?

New sump from VW is around $400. Thats bare - no level sensor or sump plug etc.

Will try and track down a used one but seriously thinking about having a go at welding it if she can find the missing piece. Haven't done a lot of alloy with the TIG, but at the moment I can think of 400 reasons to give it a go

Try giving HSY a call, and see if they stock them.

Ended up getting one from VW for $350 as they were in stock locally and I could pick it up yesterday before the long weekend.
Nice easy job to change it - probably the easiest sump I've ever removed/refitted.

Seems to be running fine so I'm pretty confident she's got away without any internal damage.

The other lesson I learned is don't believe the sales guy if he says it comes with a sump plug - it doesn't

I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in a previous post

Plug is only $4.50 from VW, and you should always replace it every time you remove it, to save trashing the thread in the new sump.

Yeah - you did, and I asked for one but he said the parts listing showed there was one with the new sump. Was in a hurry to pick it up during my lunchbreak and forgot to check there actually was one.
Had to re-use the old one yesterday but have just picked up a couple of new ones.
