MK4 GTi Fuel Economy

i read some site that was comparing all the MK4 Golfs together...and it was saying that the GTi would get better fuel economy then the 2.0L N/A ...does this make sense to anyone?

I know that the 2.0 is like .2 lts bigger then the golfs engine but the turbo would have alot too do with fuel consumption


so from reading above it would be safe 2 say that if you wernt too heavy on the accelerator you'd easily be able 2 archive 8L too 100 K's or better??

My g/f, averages between 7.5 and 8.5ltrs per 100k's depending if shes being more spirited or not. She gets just over 600k's out of a tank, i think shes seen as good as 650. Thats un-chipped on 98octane bp ultimate. We get are chip tomorrow.

Did the chip make any difference???

I usualy get 600k's a tank - but in general I'm a fairly tame driver....... I just dont slow down for corners

I got 650km driving from Adelaide to Melbourne with about seven odd litres left - easy another 50km in it. Around town I get at least 500-520kmkm with about five litres left in the tank, and that includes giving it a decent boot-full every now and then.

yher i remember when i first got mine i was suprised at the fuel economy

i usually get anywhere between 500-600ish around town with a bit of a fang here and there, find that it drinks like i fish however during a long drive through the hills etc, although this is usually the case with most cars...

translates to about 2 weeks of driving on one tank which is good news, although the soaring price of premium is starting to hurt...

well i drive a commodore and of 65L i get somewhere around 400kms to a tank ....hence why my move 2 a golf i cant wait too experence consumption under 10L per 100 kms lol becuase atm i dont even get that on the HWY and thats running premium.... i wonder if fuel prices are going to ever go back down ... i was liking it at 1.25 a L (1.38 for 98 )

yher mates 202 VK does something like 250-300/tank, crazy stuff...

got a quick glimpse of the news last night and saw something about taxes possibly being dropped or something

wishful thinking im guessing....

was also an interesting report on 60 minutes last sun about australia and other countries such as canada possibly using oil deposits in rocks to maintain crude oil supply, although i think this was more of a measure to maintin a supplly rather than to reduce prices...

it sucks i cant understand it....."apparently" we've only used 18 percent of the worlds oil supply's ....it sucks altho one good point is that people are switching too smaller cars and using less fuel....so therefor its better for the environment......... if anyone other then me cares lol

Turbos are more efficient generally, especially so when compared to similarly powered NA engines..

Although if you push the turbo, it will use alot more fuel than the 2L, but it takes fuel to make power.

Industry accounts for nearly all pollution it's just media crap the car is to blame. I'm concerned we're told we're using oil faster than we can pump it out the ground though!

actully yes...thats true...i'm pretty sure i herd somewhere that cars in australia only account for like 7% of the problem...not too sure...but i know it was a low number and 7 enters my mind...

over 25 percent tho is from cattle .....

Just thought I'd dig this thread up from the dead. Since last posting four years ago (scary how fast time flies) my fuel economy has gradually deteriorated. I'm now lucky to get 470 km to a tank (usually 450 km) but can get 550-570 km on long commutes. I always put in 98 from BP or Shell. I'll get new plugs and thermostat soon and further down the track, if I keep it, new coilpacks and O2 sensor.

I should mention I still drive it very spirited

Have you had it scanned for fault codes at all?

I flog my 2.0 slow and regularly get 630 - 650 km from a tank. (Once almost 700 km's)

seems to depend a LOT on the type of driving you do ... I'm getting about 500km/tank in my GTI at the moment but most of it is freeway driving (80-100kmh) since I changed jobs. Previously was lucky at 450km/tank around the city / suburban driving.
