GTI Advice!

120k in 13 years. not even 10k a year. mostly around town, tough on clutches. Def make sure it's had a timing belt in the past, I wouldn't be too surprised to find it hasn't.

The reason I like high mileage cars is because they have been used and therefore highway kms. This isn't hard on clutches, brakes and other running gear in my opinion.

Needs history to back it up but my S3 has 280000 on, Polo GTI on 170000 nearly. A4 wagon 240000. All pretty much running like clockwork.

Most folk wouldn't bother doing an annual service if they go by the dash warnings, they''l just ignore it until they get to 10000km. Meanwhile, stop start driving in the city is hard on the oil. Most wear occurs when the engine is cold.

At the money asked, I'd want EVERY tick in the box for that one. Timing belt, service history, 4 branded tyres not some cheap rubbish, brakes that have lots of life left in them.

No reason for cam cover gaskets to leak on their own, so someone has probably taken it off. Not required during a belt change.

Water outlet is a common failure though. Cheap to fix, pink stains on the top of the gearbox.

Black oil filters not ryco etc would indicate to me that it was serviced at a specialist, which I'd consider good.

If you are going to mod the car and throw the suspension away, you might as well start on one for less money that has worn out parts anyway.

i thought all Mk4 Gti's had digital display? and it has the labeled recaros so its got to be a '99-'01

Nope the earlier golf's did not have it, I have a 2001 and I don't have the digital dash.

do you think this is an issue seeing its stated as a 2000 model? or perhaps a bonus?

ps how can i revert the Blow off valve back to stock? the little whistle noise doesn't impress me

I would not highlight the fact. I think its a bonus.

But I just noticed something else, there is no climate control.

Something is suss with the car.

It takes 5 mins to change over the blowoff to a diverter valve

I found another gti with no climate...it must be an option!? I thought it was standard. Maybe dash is optional... Geez I thought I knew mk4 golfs

Unless the dealer says so, it won't come with any warranty. My understanding is, dealers are only required to include a short warranty if the car is under 12 years old.
It appears to be missing the front passenger side which arch liner, which could point to accident damage. I'd be looking closely at the panel alignment, and any evidence of refinishing around the front passenger side.
Also, there's something weird about a GTI not having climate control. I thought it was standard. My '99.5 has climate control and non-digital dash. Maybe you could check the white sticker inside the spare wheel cavity under the boot floor, which I believe tells you the options it left the factory with.

No climatronic
Has the 1/2 MFD. Early models did not have the digital dash bit.
The listed "factory body kit" seems to be missing.
The rear seat has the simple lap belt. This should be a 3 point retractable, built into the seat for the middle rear.

Get the VIN and then you can check exactly what is it.
or look at the build and compliance plates - located under the carpet in the rear on the left side of the spare wheel.

just did a free VIN check and comes up with '2000 Golf'

maybe newer speedo with digital display was fitted after an accident?

The instruments may have been replaced, simply as an upgrade by the prev owner.
It looks like it has a flip key with remote also, this was not standard in 2000.
Given it has a BOV it is probable the prevous owner was an Enthusiuast and made some mods.

It may be chipped too.

The Body Kit remark is just a is based on the dealers comments, there is no body kit on this car.

I too was under the assumption that climate control in a Mk4 GTi was standard? .. but then again I also thought that they came standard with sunroofs and apparently that's not the case...

Dealer reckons it's a UK/Euro import and that all the features (1/2 MFD, regular AC etc..) came standard. Not sure how true this is. I thought imports were usually 2 doors anyway?
