  • ECU Piggybacks vs Chip

looking at the various chip options at the moment, and was looking at some of the ECU piggy back setups which are available from brands such as haltech etc

my question is why dont more people choose piggyback ECU such as the one shown in the link below? from what i have read so far something like this offers more tuning abilities as well as being easier to adapt to other mods such as intakes, turbo upgrades, head work etc etc

or is there something im missing here? yes a ECU piggyback would require more labour cost to get it running right, but would probably work out the same/not that much more expensive than your big brands of 'chips'

    what does everyone else think?

For me it's the huge added complexity for no HUGE benefit.

Get a chip and the car runs as it would as standard in all conditions (cold starts, hot starts, hot temps, aircon etc etc), a piggyback ecu has to be tuned for all this.

Id rather someone elses car(s) do thousands of hours on the dynos and in all conditions rather than my car sitting on the dyno for a few hours.

I'm yet to see a car with minor mods and a piggyback ecu make more power than a chipped car with the same mods. (On an independent/same dyno - No point using the tuners dyno figures)

iv heard that if you get your car chipped it somewhat makes your car more unreliable i cant explain wat im trying to say the engine sort of gets out of tune from it self

yher was thinking the same thing, just thought i would throw up the question to see what everyone thinks

do any of the big chip brands offer any sort of tuning ability on a dyno etc?

im only doing basic mods to the car (intake, DV, upgrade IC piping etc) but read in another thread on here that the chips were designed for a 'standard' engine, and as soon as even a few mods are done

not too sure on how true this is but...

do you mean this happens with a piggyback ECU or with a common setup such as APR, REVO etc?

probably the piggyback option as i havent heard of this problem with the chip upgrade option on any of the forums

also i had a mate with a pigyback ecu (not a vw btw) and he had all sorts of problems with the engine running like crap in different conditions

                  http://www.haltech.com/interceptor.htm

Not worth the effort mate, 1100 bucks for the interceptor plus fitting and say 4 hours dyno time, at 100+ an hour for the same power that you can get from an off the shelf product that has had considerably more R and D done on it.

Most people are not into big turbos or mods past an exhaust and intake. Those that are usually go in one big hit, which would include the software mods to suit.

Check out www.custom-code.co.uk Their software gets great reviews in the UK. If you are serious about chipping your car and want to deal with someone in Adelaide, PM me.

if any of you guys bothered to read about the haltech interceptor, before shooting off your mouth, you would realise thet, the std factory computer still runs, all the std **** in your car like aircon, idol step up,cold start, and alll the rest of the crap, they cost about 1500-1600 fitted takes 1-2 days fitted/tuned, i had one in my car and never had one problem since the day i got it fitted after having a chip.

1 chip im my car leaned out to the max,
2 never made any real power at all

                    chip+95kw atw
haltech =119.8kw atw on the 30ish run while tuning it.

i know a lot of other people have had a lot of lean out issues
mk4 the mods begin for round 2 hahahha

All - please discuss like adults or dont post.

OP - this is a hard one to answer. I'd sugest having a read over some of the previous posts regarding this and you should find most of the info your after.
