Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk4 GTi engine shutdown at temp..

    Hello,

I know this isn't a great real first post, however I've been searching a lot about this, and spoken to a few mechanics.. My GTi has a current issue where as soon as it's up to temp (90 degrees) it'll shutdown, and won't start again until it cools down (give it an hour or two) so I can get a good drive up to 10km before it's useless..

No warning lights occur, or anything. Engine just turns itself off. And we're already dismissed it as a fuelling issue (i.e. tested that and it's not that).

Mechanic reckons it's a possible ignition coils issue, i.e. they are failing due to heat.

Has anyone here experienced this issue before?

    Cheers,
    Raj

My S3 did this, it was the crank angle sensor, in the block down behind the filter housing where the gearbox bolts on. Easily the most likely failure that shuts down the whole engine. I can't recall if that shows up in the ECU as a fault. It certainly does in the ME7 ECU but yours is an ME3.8

Coilpacks on the Golf are pretty good but the ignition amp, in the back of the airbox, normally only drops one cylinder at a time if it goes.

First step is to scan it with VCDS.

The Crank Angle Sensor did show up on a scan on my GTI.
And a single coil or the ignition amp will just make it run crap and sound like a Subaru.

Crank sensor seems to be affected by heat when they play up. Mine would not start at the shops, left it and went back with some more tools a few hours later and it started right up, drove straight to the mechanics.

Thanks guys, from both what you're saying it does sound like the CAS.. Just waiting for a mobile mech to do the check, and I'll reckon I'll get that replaced if it's the cause. Shame it doesn't throw up the warning light or anything. But if it's just the CAS then it should be a relatively cheap fix. Also need to get the coolant temp sensor replaced as well and she's as good as gold.
