  • RE: 228mm Clutch Kit

    Hi All,

I am exploring the very real possibility that my clutch is on the way out.
I have done a bit of reasearch into some changes to provide a more progressive / heavy duty results, however I have a quick question.

I believe the Gearbox code is EVS.

Does anyone know if these are 220mm or 225mm clutch discs?

As I am looking to source a kit from the states and they have asked me that question. I have heared that its possible to upgrade to the VR6 228mm clutch disc, does anyone have experience with this?

Also some of the brands that I have been looking at are LUK, Sachs and Valeo. Any preference to these companies?

I will also get a single mass lightened flywheel at the same time, 14lbs.

If anyone can help with the above, that would be great!

i have converted to a single mass flywheel on my A3. I used an ABF flywheel and VR6 clutch from Extreme clutch in Adelaide.

The FW was lightened when I got it and I had it refaced at Extreme clutch.

The car idles a bit rougher and gear changes are not quite as smooth. The fitting when OK, which I did myself.

I have had a problem but this was present before the swap. The pedal is right at the end of it's travel. I have got used to dipping the clutch all the way.

I tried a new slave cylinder but that made no difference. In the end I had a mate machine up an extension for the push rod on the slave cylinder. This is 5mm long and didn't make a whole lot of difference TBH.

There is an adjustable pivot for the clutch release arm, I reckon I could sort the problem by extending this. Of course getting motivated to remove the gearbox again is the problem with that fix.

The main reason for going SM was for the extra power handling capability, as I have fitted a bigger turbo.

Thanks Gavin, some things to look out for there...

Out of interest, do you remember the size of the old clutch, was it 220mm or 225mm? Did you upgrade it to the 228mm clutch plate also.

What does you car idle at now, does it fluctuate or is just lumpy now?

I might give extreme clutch a call on monday and grab some info from them also.

I just read that you used the VR6 clutch, that would be the 228mm clutch disc then! My Bad...

              Update...

After Jimmys fine support in diagnosing the problem, it turned out not to be the Clutch Slave Cyliner or the Clutch Master Cylinder.

What seems to have happened is the pressure plate is on its way out, thus causing problems!

Just some info for you all that I have sourced...

              99 - 2001.5 / Golf GTI use 220mm Clutch Plate
              2001.5 - 2005 Golf GTI use 225mm Clutch Plate
              (Both with dual mass flywheel)

To upgrade to a 228mm Clutch Plate, you have to ditch the DMF and get a Single Mass Flywheel.

              OEM DMF weighs 27lbs.
Single Mass Flywheel can be in three weights; 22lbs / 14lbs/ 7lbs.

              Three main players in the OEM Clutch Kit department;

              - VALEO
              - Sachs
              - LUK

All very good in there own rights.

              I just purchased the following clutch kit from the USA;

              - Sachs Clutch Plate (228mm) (Sprung Centre Clutch)
              - Sachs Pressure Plate
              - OEM Single Mass Flywheel (22lbs)
              - OEM Release Bearing / Throwout Bearing
              - OEM Flywheel / Pressure Plate Bolts
              - Alignment Tool

I will keep you up to date!

When my clutch went in my 4motion, they replace the master and that didnt fix it. So I had to battle but eventually they replaced the pressure plate and all the rest free of charge.

Mine was fine from start but after a while the pedal would drop about half and stick as in I would have to pull it back up with my foot even though I could still change. The real way to tell was to drive at 60 and put it in a high gear and check if it slipped.

Cheers for the info and a great help posting the links, saves all the hunting down the dark alleyways of the web.
Look forward to feeling how different that clutch will be, might be a bit more aggressive.
Probably will find the thing will spool up quicker too.

well i currently Run a Eurospec G60 clutch and flywheel combo Flywheel wieght is 14lbs. The clutch is o sooo smooth really soft and best of all its a high performance clutch. So currently not a problem for my 220HP At wheel GTI, but should come in handy if i indeed wanted to go to K04 or GT28RS kit. But it was not cheap bought here in NZ the clutch kit here was around $1895+GST.

but cannot be more happy in anyway.

My Girlfriends car, which comes from hitmanR32. He installed a VR6 SMF clutch kit. Now he did that as he needed it to work with the chipped car.

                          He liked the clutch kit.
I personally do not like the kit i find it very heavy and spongy in comparison to that of the Eurospec clutch kit.

Also these kits where not available at the time of purchase for him ,hence his only choice was to use the VR6 clutch kit.
