Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DMF and SMF Pros and Cons... need help!

    Hey all,

    Firstly apologies if this has been asked before, and please excuse me if I sound ignorant, I'm just a noob!

    I have a Mk4 GTi as my daily and it's coming to that stage in it's life where I will need to replace the clutch soon.
    Now I do know that I will reguire a Dual Mass flywheel, however, I was wanting to know if its possible to put in a Single Mass flywheel instead, and if so what would be the major cons of having a SMF?

    The reason I ask this is because from what little I have been able to learn about the DMFs is that the only real pro to having them is that they make gear changes smoother.. Other than that, they cost more (almost double) and they wear out quicker. It has also been suggested that they are only good if your car is stock (performance wise).. Whilst my car is stock atm, I do have some things in store for it (new exhaust and probably have it chipped). Which leads me to my next question, would these modifications even really effect the DMF..? - I mean, its not like I'm puting a bigger turbo in.

    A Single Mass flywheel on the other hand is cheaper, but will tend to transmit more vibrations.. I'm also lead to believe that when replacing a clutch with a SMF you dont necessarily have to replace the SMF but with a DMF you do?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    You cant predict the clutch is going to give up.

    I have had Phase 1 Polo's rip a DMF apart in a few KM. Then there's vwthunder who is running a Frankenturbo through one with over 250hp.

    I had a stage 1 ECS kit that couldn't handle the torque of the FT on my Polo, so I now have a stage 3 kit from Four Seasons tuning, to compliment the billet turbo.

    Mine vibrates because of the poly dog bone, not the clutch itself.

    I'd put the money away for a SMF kit and keep driving until the DMF gives up. Even with a tune, it'll live a while. Once you have some slippage, order the kit and drive carefully for a couple of weeks.
