  • AGU 1.8T 20V common faults/ problem??

    Hey all i got a AGU 1.8T 20V out of the crashed Gti i bought not to long ago and just wanted to know, what are the main things to look out for on these motors ?

    im going to do your basic stuff like plugs oil and filter and replace a few gaskets that are leaking , but what else should i be doing while the motors out ?

    was thinking about doing the cam/timing belt ? ... i also herd these motors have a sludge problem if oils not changed on time ?

    any input or information would be great

    They don't like missed oil changes, that's true.

    Def do the belt and water pump/tensioners. Otherwise they are solid.

      Thinking about pulling the sump and checking for sludge think this is a good idea before installing in to the car ?? And if I do find sludge how do I go about cleaning it out of the rest of the motor ?

        Yeah, the sump is easy to pull. Check inside and post a picture. If it's bad the pickup for the pump could be blocked. Clean it off with degreaser and a brush, it breaks down pretty easily. If it's filthy inside, I am not sure I'd try cleaning it off. As you could dislodge big lumps of crap that will later on, block the pick up.

        Personally, I'd just over maintain it for a while. Quarterly/4000km oil changes or something. Checking the oil for crap. Maybe do 2 changes and drop the sump again.

          is it worth running an "engine oil flush" through these engines to clear some of this sludge(when not able to remove the sump) ? or is it more of a snake oil/high risk manoeuvre due to the crap that can be dislodged?

            It can dislodge more crap. Just depends how bad it is.

            Pull the sump first, you'll know if you have to go further.
