Wheels For MK4 Golf

Hi Guys.
Im currently after a set of 17"/18" wheels for my MK4 Golf to replace the current 14" Steel Rims with hubcaps and i was wondering about how i would do so.

After removing one of my wheels i discovered that it doesn't have studs that come out of the wheel hubs, which got me kind of confused as I've never seen a configuration like this before (Yes I'm New to Golf's).
Will i need to convert my hubs to have studs coming out, so i can fit the new wheels I'm after for this to work?
Please help as i am unsure what to do.

On a side note what are your thoughts on using hub adaptors to run wheels with different stud patterns?
(5x100 to 5x112) I've heard that they are illegal but still hear of people using them.

Yeah, most euro cars use bolts instead of studs afaik. You don't need to do a stud conversion but you may have to buy new bolts depending on what wheels you get. Most oem wheels have spherical seat bolts while most aftermarket rims use conical seat bolts. There are a few nice sets of wheels in the for sale section atm that would fit a mk4. Also have a look at the wheel FAQ at the top of this forum. Most questions you will have are already answered in there. As far as spacers/adapters go, illegal and will void insurance so use at your own risk

I went and looked at a set of 18" VW wheels today for it which came with brand new tyres for an extremely cheap price, only to find they had the wrong stud pattern of 5x112.

Where would be the best place to purchase new bolts if needed? I'd prefer to stay in SA if possible, and nationally in Australia at the furthest.

not sure what your budget is, but also try this website in the UK.

they do fantastic quality rims and the guy there is incredibly helpful regarding best fit, bolts, spacers etc etc

I'm trying to stay under 1k for wheels and the looks of prices on there are a bit steep for me
Ive only had my car for a week and I'm rather low on funds, a casual job whilst still at school just doesn't cut it aha.

Wheels are really my first priority on the car as the current tyres are near to the bar and would rather put some extra money towards a whole new set with tyres.

Although 5x100 isn't the ideal stud pattern for aftermarket wheels, you could always look at wheels from an OEM make (some audi and other vw wheels). The audi S3 (1st gen), Polo GTI (9N3 and 6R), Audi TT (1st gen) and even new models such as Skoda Fabia's etc. all share identical stud pattern and centrebore size to your golf. Steer clear of other 5x100 wheels from Subaru and Toyota as they often have offsets that are pretty sucky and the centrebore size is often too small (my 2c).

Thanks Bflat I've been looking most of today for wheels and gees its a nightmare aha.
as soon as shops hear 5x100 with a +38 offset they don't know where to start lol.

I think oem will probably be my best bet to get some decent looking wheels that fit my car.

Should be able to get wheels second hand under 1k if you are willing to wait.
I run adapters daily for years, doesn't worry me. But as said above, not legal in aus.

I was thinking off selling my bora stock wheels (16s) which will bolt straight on, have tyres with a mm or two tread left but they should be replaced from age. If your keen pm me

i hope to find them soon, so i dont have to spend money on new tyres for my 14s LOL. (As soon as I'm stopped by the boys in blue i won't be in a good position)

thanks for the offer but finding something in sa will be a lot easier. freighting wheels isnt the best of plans when money is tight.
i could get 14/15/16" wheels that are cheap but would rather put money towards wheels that id want to keep.

the pricing isnt that bad.

for example, you can get 18" Golf R reps

NEW 18" GOLF R ALLOYS IN SILVER ET35, BM Autosport Ltd

These delivered to your door would be around $800 and would bolt straight on (though I would recommend you add some tyres as well!!)

or just be savvy and import from japan like i did... landed rims for less than half what they are worth, and not many people have them
