Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Need advice: Mk4 GTI

I have about 6-7k to spend on a new car. If I found a GTI for that amount would it most likely be thrashed?
also, how reliable are these cars? My dad is pushing me to get a standard mk4 as he thinks they will be more reliable. He also isn't keen for the GTI as he thinks they are all going to be thrashed and driven hard. What do you think about that?
Once the water pump and timing belt have been replaced, how long do they last? When will I have to change them next?
Would much prefer the GTI over a base model mk4 but I just need to know if I can find one that cheap, if they are reliable and aren't thrashed.

Also, I have no knowledge about turbos. Will I face any issues with the turbo on a GTI? If so are they costly to repair?

    thanks everyone!

a 2lt could have been as flogged as a gti.
id be looking for a full service history with a vw/euro specialist.

what do you prefer about the gti? other then the engine you can get 2lt mk4s that have the same options.
    Bora gone
    Vento VR6
    MKIV GSW TDI

yeah that sounds like the way to go! Thanks for your reply.

Steering wheel, recaro seats, turbo, it's a gti, engine, lower springs...
Id just prefer a more zippy sporty car over the dull 1.6.
