  • To all Bora 4Motion owners, lets talk about your mods

I will be picking up a stock Bora 4Motion this weekend and am already keenly looking at some basic mods. Basically I will initially be wanting to do:

    wheels (17 or 1
exhaust (cat back, maybe high-flow cat too)
suspension (nothing too firm, just lower with a sportier shock, maybe Koni FSD)
Rear sway bar (prolly Whiteline, maybe Neuspeed)
R32/TT Control arm bushings (got some lying around already)
    Dogbone mount

    Maybe later on:

Techtonics cams with custom or cam-specific chip

So, what brands etc have people gone with? Who have you purchased through? What kinda prices have you paid? I am finding that USA sites are not so useful as they did not get the 4motion V6, and UK sites are pretty expensive.

Anyway, let me know what youve done!

So far i have only done my suspension and replaced air filter with k&n element. Also replaced stereo with 2 din dvd/sat nav. My plans for performance upgrades have so far been put on hold due to the bang for bucks issue with NA upgrades. Ive been told that i could spend anywhere up to 5k+ on exhaust, chip, headers for a maximum increase of approx 30kw at flywheel which hardly seems worthwhile to me. So im saving my pennies and maybe one day a supercharger will no longer be just a dream..

Having said that the one mod that seems to be on everyones lips when it comes to 4motion is the haldex upgrade with which Im sure you are familiar. There was a big group buy of these here a few months ago and im interested to hear from the guys how these are going..

As for my own mods the bilstein coilovers are awsome, a bit pricey but make a world of difference. They are height adjustable only but seeing as i use this car for everyday driving and not planning on doing much track work, for me they are perfectly balanced between handling and ride comfort.

Also the air filter makes the car feel slightly more responsive when accelerating and also sounds a little nicer i believe. However this might be due to the fact that the old filter was jam packed with crap ranging from sand to bugs to dinosaurs in it I dont think it had ever been changed before.

Good luck with the new car, and dont forget that no pics = ban

hey guys what dog bone mounts do you use..?

If your looking for comfort mounts ie ones that are stiff as **** but dont bring vibration in to your cabin like the VF ones..

then i suggest getting hold of EIP ones..

althou i make my own ones that are very similar to the EIP ones but i can vary the stiffness..

Hey Steve, was wondering when someone would start asking about parting out bits of ol kermit! The VR is currently getting a once over to get ready for sale. I plan to sell with all mods, so no parting out sorry!

I might have the slowest 4motion around:
              18inch Advanti Vennia with 235/40
              12 sheets of Dynamat
              Boston SL-60's
              Audison Amps
              Oz Audio ME 12.2
              30kg sub box
              250Amp earthing kit ( 0ga into 5x 4ga )
              Optima D34M
              Electrical tape on rear lights
              Eyelids
              Air freshener

All I have done is add weight.
Bora has gone ;( Custom sub box and beige floor mats to suit for sale.

                4Motion Mods

                Hi guys.
I've got a stock 2003 Bora V6 4Motion [60k] and on the weekend [now they have arrived] I'm looking at fitting the Haldex Gen1 controller & Neuspeed sway bar and strut tie [thanks to group buys for both]. Next on the list once I save up will be Koni FSD [p/n 2100.4042] and Eibach Pro Kit Springs [p/n 8591-140] & finally [for this year] look at doing something about the air intake. I think I might need some advice here.
I had a look at the K&N site and it gives me 3 choices:
                K&N Typhoon Air Intake System
                K&N 57i Series Induction Kit
                K&N Replacement Panel Air Filter

Is there a big difference between these? What would be recommended? Or should I look at another type of CAI?
                Thanks,
                David

When I had a Bora, the first thing to go were the dusty stock pads. In the "old days" when Bendix made Metal Kings, thats what I used. Always liked 'em - no mess, no rotor wear and reasonable performance. Initial brake application in wet weather was startling but got used to that. The only thing was that Bendix did not list pads for the Bora so a friendly brake shop is the go. If memory serves, the physical dimensions are the same as for an Astra (?). The only hassle was the wear indicators, but they were easily bypassed. As enthusiasts we visually check brake wear.
Just as a matter of interest, how do you folk go with your lowered Boras? I remember a VW parts fellow saying that VW did not recommend lowering the 4-Motions as they were lower than the rest of the range - all I did was upgrade the dampers with Bilstein units. Having destroyed a sump in the middle of nowhere, I can see their point.

IBN, with regards to lowering, I think it depends on what sort of driving you do, where you do it and how you do it

Yeah I have contacted Race brakes in Sydney and hopefully they can help me out. I am hoping to get some Hawk or Ebc that suit. I dislike the stock brakes.

Ha the Bora 4motion isn't that low, plently of potential there. That said, take it rallying with lowered springs and something will break as qsilverza said.

True true. Never took the beast rallying. Was just going skiing on Mt Stirling one winter and hit a snow covered rock. The road was just one of those standard dirt/gravel roads you'd find anywhere in Australia and in reasonable condition.. The problem is if the road has a slightly high crown, you can come unstuck. If you venture off the bitumen in a MkIV/Bora I believe you need to take a bit of extra care.
It was interesting, when I got hold of VW assist, the operator reckoned that I was the 5th "lucky customer" that morning that had trashed their sump
Looked into things a bit and found that VW in Europe offered a sump guard, but fitment required raised(!) springs and various suppliers OS also had their offerings: http://www.dieselgeek.com/servlet/Detail?no=358
Don't get me wrong, a lowered Bora is a damn fine looking beast, but I have found that juggling assorted prorities sometimes gives me a headache. My $0.02
                              Cheers,
                              Ivars
