  • Mk4 1.8 non turbo

    Hey all.
Can anyone shed some light on what the 1.8ltr non turbo Mk4 is like???
Any differences (besides the 0.2lt) between the 2.0ltr???

    Does it go ok?

You have to rev them pretty hard. The UK had these 20v 1800s badged as GTIs but they were pulled from the line up in favour of 2 litre 8 valves because the torque was better.

Yeah the few aussie ones were sent by accident and some/all are three door I think. The engine goes ok in a passat so golf shouldn't be too bad. If it's performance you want go past em and get the turbo!

Never seen a 3 door one Robin, but I`m gonna look now.

The same NA engine goes well in the Wifes Audi Wagon.
She reckons its hard to keep it under 120 and we dont need a turbo. OK

They are defintaley out there although I'm sure there is only about 20 of these n/a cars in oz from what people have said in the past. The only one I've seen advertised was a three door

I have seen 2 at the damaged car auctions and they were both 4 doors.

Same engine as the a3 1.8L I thought - Doesn't it make more power than the 2.0?

Yeah, i do want the gti, but the wallet won't let me go up to 15k for a GTI
this ones around the 10k mark, but I only thought that we only received
                the 1.6,2.0 and the 1.8turbo

So which is the better of the two? the 1.8 or the 2.0?

This ones not too bad, except for the garish colour.....lime green, but it seems nice.

the Mk4 1.8 20v came in '98-'99 before it was replaced in late '99 by the 2.0 8v.

For model designation it was the GLE (ie GL was 1.6 8v, GLE was the 1.8 20v/2.0 8v, GTI was the 1.8T 20v)

The 1.8 has more power (92kW vs 85kW) and needs to be revved a bit more, but the 2.0 has more bottom end torque.

I understand that the first few batches of Mk4's came from south africa and the quality wasn't as expected, before Oz production switched to germany (somebody want to double check?), and then subsequently back to south africa late in the model's life.

my pick? a 1.8 for more power, 2.0 if you want a bit more torque.

(says me with a lowly 1.6.....)

I used to drive a MKIV Golf in Gold back in South Africa, it was the 1.8 and it was so new at the time we had to get the leather fitted aftermarket as there wasn't any available with leather yet, the 1.8 T was not on sale yet.

We had a Mk 3 Golf GTI from that to an Audi B5 2.6 Avant tip-tronic and than we got the golf Mk IV at the same time.

The golf was a lot of fun to drive and I thought it had a decent amount of pull, especially compared to the V5 110 KW version that we had later on, especially considering that NA cars lost about 20 % of there power that high up. (Jhb)

So yes, I think the 1.8 is a good engine.

I've also heard about the 3 door ones. There was only a handfull and I think they were all white also. I think a dealer in Canberra got most of them. Full poverty pack with arm powered windows, digitally remastered cassette deck and a roaring fan to blow more hot air in your face in case it wasn't already hot enough.

The 1.8 would be my choice of n/a engines in the Mk4. I now a mate with a 1.6 who gave a 2L a run and there wasn't much in it.
