Coil Packs

Hi there,

I'm in the process of gathering parts and the like, making sure im replacing those parts that are prone to fail.

Unfortunately i don't have a service history for my car. I've got the clutch done, timing belt kit and water pump will be done soon.

I'm a bit stuck on coil packs. I understand that the AGU 1.8T Golfs, particularly the older model, like mine (99) have 3 pins and are bolted in as opposed to 4 mins.

Can anyone clarify this or direct me to a part number.

Alternatively i have read that 2.0T coils can be used with an adapter plate. But these coils are the newer type 4 pin push down.

I don't want to purchase a set from dealers. PSI tuning have a set and i've sent an email to see if they are compatible with my car.

I'll be honest i haven't even looked at my car to see whats there, will do it tonight.

Any help will be much appreciated.

The bolt down coil packs are pretty reliable, it's the amplifier that lives in the top of the airbox that is far less reliable.

So on top of the adapter to run the push on coilpacks, you need to rewire the ignition as well. A lot of work, for probably no gain in performance.

I use BKR7E NGK in my cars and change at the first sign of a misfire.

I would leave the coilpacks alone and if you need an amplifier I keep one, so it could be with you overnight, if you can't get one locally.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

What spark plug remover tool should be used ? I tried to pull one for inspection and none of the 4 tools I had got even close to fitting down that narrow hole.

Also what gap are people setting ? I was thinking 0.7mm (0.028"), this is not standard on any plug.

I run mine just short of 30thou. The std gap on the BKR7E is 35thou. They seem to run ok even when up to 40thou, I took some out of Anthony's Polo the other week that had opened up that far. He said he had just started to feel a bit of hesitation, when getting on it.

Service life on copper plugs is at least 15k in my experience. So the overall cost is close to the same in effect, just spread out over the same time frame.

Those are the correct plugs, ECS must sell millions because I haven't found anywhere close to their pricing. I you are putting in an order, I'd take half a dozen sets at least Let me know.

I got my Lambda probe from them last year.
They have $8 flat rate shipping per order.

I was going to order this week $4.40 each + $8 shipping from Melbourne. $25.60 all done.
