  • 2001 Golf 1.6 engine in trouble

Just to top off the worst car i have ever bought, today found that the fuel sensor is stuffed, spark plugs need replacing and the engine has used all its oil in about 700km of driving. This on an engine with 80000km, a full history and seemingly running fine when i bought it only a month ago.

Seems like the engine needs to come out for a rebuild based upon the amount of oil its using. So far we have replaced the thermostat as it was running flat cold, one of the fans wasn't working and ever since its been operating at normal temperature the plumes of smoke from the rear are embarrassing.

    Question
Is it worth fixing or do i just put it down to experience.
Bodywork and general condition is really good.
    Its a late 2001 1.6 manual
    Cheers

When did the car last have its oil changed. Are you sure it was full 700km ago?

In the service manual it states the car burns around 1L of oil per 1000km.

I found the 1.6L to be very reliable, I took ours to 210,000k before selling it. The engine was the best thing about it.

I also recommend using 98 octane fuel. It might sound rediculous, but from when I owned our 1.6L. The car was woeful on anything but 98.

I wouldn't give up on it just yet, take it to a VW mechanic and have it scanned for errors with vagcom.

We bought the car from a guy in Newcastle and agreed to have a service done prior to buying it. This was done by the guy that sold us the car which included an oil change as you would expect.
Since then i have driven one full tank of 95 octane fuel and had the thermostat replaced. This was obviously a big problem and the engine must have been running cold for some time but it wouldn't show on a short run. Now the engine can reach proper temperature it is throwing up one problem after another.
Seems to be a money pit right now.
