  • how do i get off the gear boot

as the title suggests i'm going to get my gear boot re-upholstered in leather...but i can't get it off.

the plastic trim which the boot is stapled to pops up from the bottom but i can't unscrew the gear knob and their is some heavy duty clip or something around the shifter which i don't want to mess with.

    whats the deal?

    cheers

i'm guessing you're talking about the black and white 'teeth' rings which are on the bott and the shifter.

only problem is i can't get the knob off yet. do i just keep unscrewing it? do i yank it off? does it have a little allen pin which some have?

        cheers

Mk 4s have a metal clip normally holding on the knob, by spreading the squeeze tag part of it the lever should come straight up.

                          quick update:

i broke off the standard clip and the knob/boot came off without too much of a fight.

i unpicked the boot and now i have the two pieces ready to go, just need to get some leather and i'll have it done. Found a place in warterloo who have automotive leather so i'm going to get some from them.

btw - is anyone else interested in re-doing theres? might be an advantage to buying a bit more leather?

                            update 2:

finally got around to getting leather:

went to NSW Leather: http://www.nswleather.com.au/ and they ended up giving me a free off cut which was great.

i've given that to the tailor and he'll have that done this week. looking forward to installing the finished product. that was the only thing making the interior look tired. now to sell it
