Worked out about half price with the exchange so happy $ damage wasnt more

Car hasnt run so smooth with great pickup now since i got it about 60k ago.

Shifting up is a bit poppier and feels a bit different but i am taking that as a good sign

        Further sagas:

The car is running alot better now with more power etc but now i only get 450km to tank as opposed to 650km beforehand.

Very rich fuel smell still noticeable, particularly when sitting at lights etc, and can will still blow a bit of smoke at start up most of the time.

Something simple as a tune up?

Anyone know a decent VW mechanic around Parramatta? Need a mechanic who is competent and i can trust not to rip off the reasonably naive

You can't tune up modern VWs. There are no adjustments. There is possibly something else amiss with your car.

You need to get it scanned for faults.

I would guess its either the temp sensor or it could be running too cold ie Thermostat. I had an A4 do the same and it affected the running and furl consumption. That thing has never ran better.
Like H100w says you need some figures from your ecu to see what its getting and what its giving.

Last mechanic replaced the coolant temp sensor which did bugger all, except set me back $210 before i got on these forums and members rightly suggested the MAF but seems like there is still something else going on.

Just no faith in these midas guys as they scanned it and first time it showed 7 separate issues then apparently none. Will take the Bug-Racer suggestion on board.

                Thanls again for replies

Ps: anyone know the guy that works at North Rocks, big beard and long hair. Works on aircooled mostly ...used to take my Bay bus there and he was pretty good. Think his name is Andrew. Wonder whether he has know how for a modern VW.

Yeah Midas Hmmmmm mate 7 faults generally only means 1. Like i say you need to see what inputs and outputs you are getting within measured value blocks on VAG 5052 or Vagcom. You could have unmetered air (airleak) which too can cause dramas. In measured value blocks you can also measure what the O2 sensors are doing, this plays a very important role with mixture control.
Let us know how you go mate
                  Cheers
