I have had an APR tune on my R32 since 2004 and now my car has 230,000km's on it with absolutely no problems.
In the US they have different fuel octanes, which 98 is not one of them. My car was one of the first to be tuned after the original US tune was customized for Australian fuel and conditions. Short answer is, you can't get it done in the US as the tune is different.
