  • Automatic Transmission problem with the 1.6L Golf GL Mk4...

Hello! This car is really testing my patience lately.

Car: Mk4 1.6L Golf GL (BFQ engine)

When the car is set to gear 'D', the car is stuck in 3rd gear. It will not automatically go into gears 1, 2 or 4.

I can manually change gears 1, 2, and 3 fine.

Does this mean the transmission is pretty much in need of a rebuild?

Is this an expensive process? Most likely... just great.

    Any tips would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Not much of a helpful post but there's plenty of the people who have had the same issue (just like TCC slip);
    Google 01m stuck in 3rd

    Edit:
Seems stuck in 3rd is some sort of "limp mode"
    "Update.....

So i ordered the new harness and all 7 solenoids, because I didnt want to just replace the one that was bad as I dont want to have to do it again any time soon. I just finished the install this weekend as I had to get a new transmission pan as mine was sooooo rusty it had holes in it after I had it sandblasted .

Anyway, the car is FIXED! It switches gears just fine and is no longer stuck in 3rd. Amazing!! Im so glad there was info on this subject. Great Job EVERYONE for contributing"

Thanks I was trying to establish what gearbox the car had. The engine code of BFQ is highly unusual for a golf? Almost like it has been given an Audi engine code.

I rang Charles at CVWC Belconnen and he put me into contact with Mark at Tuggeranong Transmissions (62931802).

Mark detailed that the car was indeed in 3rd gear limp mode. Could be a problem with the valves, solenoids, or internal.

Ill have to book it in to have him look at the car. Wont be for 2 weeks..

Ill keep the thread updated as I go.

Bfq isn't unusual at all, its a 1.6 VW for sure. Ill suggest you scan the whole car. Ive had one before that blew a fuse the 02 sensor, this isn't shown in the fuse card, it only comes under efi. Before getting to hectic with info you will need to scan it along with at least the engine. Its not always the gearbox at fault, BIG mistake by a lot of shops, seen it enough when I was going round independent shops checking just that.
My take, before condemning the dearest part
