  • Possible Ignition Coil issue

first the issue... on my way to uni via monash fwy, car has its days but sometimes it likes to drop it's rpm randomly which feels like the car lunges back. it doesn't happen continuously but just randomly here and there and once it happens the car loses its power.

my dad suggested it's a issue related to the ignition coil. I'm not sure what it could be...thoughts?

VagCom scan and logging would help. If you see timing issues / misfires on a cyl, you can move the coil packs, see if the issue moves with it.

Could be a Vac line issue or one of many other things.

Could be a blocked fuel filter. Even if it is recently replaced it can only take one tank of dodgy fuel to block it up again

golf mk4 1.6L, the car does drop its rpm.

Yeah wanted to run a scan. Suggestions on where to get it done? vw dealers quoted around $100

I had 1 of my ignition coils go recently and all it does is drop power and idles a little rough. Can still drive the car. To diagnose try removing one ignition coil lead at a time (with the engine running) and when you get no change in idle you've found the buggered one. Probably worth doing them all though cause usually when one goes, the others arn't far behind.

May not be your problem though but might be worth a look, doesnt take long to check

if its missfiring/only running on 3 cylinders etc, but swapping the coilpacks around doesnt change anything, it could be the ignition control module, my one went when i had the a3. fixed the problem straight away but that was missfiring..
