Hi all,

Has anyone ever tried to make a ram-air CAI for a vr6 bora? I'm considering trying to put one together but i'm not sure how much gain (if any) i would get.
If anyone has, what are the pros and cons or any tips to do with fabricating one.

Thinking if I do make one (depending on advice received) would sheet aluminium or plastic be better to create the initial intake? Also what filter would be the best? I was thinking along the lines of a decent sized K&N pod or possibly putting a K&N panel in the original air box and channeling the air through that.

Here's an idea you might be able to modify to fit your car (mine is a GTI). I used a Heavy Duty funnel from an Auto Parts store, cut the tube part off it so it could be used as an intake collector at the passenger side lower vent. The pics show how it turned out, it does the job very nicely and has been on the car for the last 4 years. The only other advice I could give is to use a pipe with a smoother internal surface than the one I used.









Anyway hopefully it will give you some food for thought.

While being aware that there's lots of debate about whether doing these kind of mods actually produces gains on a turbo car, I'll say on my car yes there is a benefit to having plenty of cool air pushed up to the filter housing (add to this the Venturi effect of the 6" V-Flow Intake). There is a couple of things that are noticeable, if I drive the car for a while on a cold Canberra day and then pull up, even though the ambient temp of the whole engine bay may be quite hot, if I put my hand on the air ducting, the filter housing and filter itself, they are ice cold to touch. That's telling me that plenty of cold air is being pushed up/presented to the filter. I also notice that my car performs noticeably better on cool/cold days as compared to a warm/hot day, so even though some people will say "it makes no difference because the air is hitting a hot turbo", my car still prefers the colder air temp of a cold day as opposed to hotter air (ie from engine bay), so for me at least the cooler the air is, the better.

I think you would see some gains, especially on a naturally aspirated engine.

You'd see little to no gain from a CAI on an NA car. You'd see a slight gain on a Turbocharged car though.
