  • 2004 Bora audio setup help

*repost from other forum as i got 1 reply in over 2 weeks*

I am currently installing a new sound system in the car.

At the moment it has a "gamma" radio and cassette player and a single cd player above it.

I want to change to a double din size unit.

I understand you can cut the audio connectors, and re-solder the new generic connector to it, this however is not an option, as when i sell the car, i will be returning it to stock.

    So the questions are :

1 where can i get a suitable wiring iso block in Australia.
2 will this turn the system on and off with ignition, or will i have to provide a switched power feed (seen this in many youtube jetta vids)
3 where can i get a good quality double din facia adaptor in australia,
4 anybody done a guide for this ?

    Sorry for all the questions,

Car is 2004 VW bora V5

I then came across a vid on youtube of an american guy (with a grey bora with green plastidip wheels) who did a vid however the iso block on his car it totally different

    Update
Hey guys, received my removal keys today, pulled the unit out.

Just to confirm, i have a Gamma radio cassette, and a separate single din vw branded single cd unit.

I looked at the above video that you posted, thanks for that. However my wiring setup is sliglty different.

I have 2 standard looking iso connectors, and a standard looking right angled female areal connector, also the multi coloured external cd player connectors (not the all in one vw plug shown in vid.

the External cd player has a lead that goes to the gamma (the multi coloured one) and a strange looking cable with only 2 wires (grey and brown) that disappear below my steering wheel.

    My question is this.

Any ideas of the purpose of the leads coming from cd unit ( i dont have steering controls etc)

and i would assume, that i will be using a standard iso connector to connect to the head unit, will i still have to take the 75X feed mentioned in the above vid.

    Has anybody tackled this??

You are very unlikely to find an Oz source

eBay or direct purchase from UK are more likely options
(I had to do this with my Mazda3)

Here is an example, VW Bora car to DIN adaptor cable and Facia Plate
Volkswagen Bora Double DIN Facia JVC Steering Wheel Adaptor Car Stereo Kit | eBay
2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers
APR Stage II ECU - APR 3" exhaust down pipe & high flow catalyst
APR/HP Roll bars - Eibach springs and Bilstien shocks
Supaloy lower control arms - Enkei 18*8 Wheels

Thanks m8, yea i had considered that, might do that, but could go for a cheaper one as dont need the steering wheel control etc,

any bora owners tackled this? I am quite interested in the whole switch power 75x thing ( if required)

Autobarn have a surprising array of connectors and conversion looms - take what you have into them, along with the car and they might have something that will help or can get one in for you

The off the shelf connectors you find at the local auto shops will generally work, and cost about $20.
However, from my experience, they do not have the connector for the lighting switch, which means your stereo will not dim when you have your lights on.
What you can do is buy a universal iso connector from them and solder it to the connector that comes with your head unit.

Think it needs power as it is some kind of signal amp

any ideas if i need one of these ariel amplifiers when i fit my aftermarket radio ? also which one would be suitable? current setup is VW gamma radio and tape player, with additional single din vw cd player.

                    Thanks in advance

I can recall my old sony head unit had one of these fitted:

On removal the signal dropped a fair bit.

I used to run a couple of Strathfield Car Radios workshops for about 4 years back in the day and am happy to help out. To give the best advice, it's best if I see photos of exactly each issue..

Wiring harness: Aerpro are the main company in Australia that makes & sells stereo head unit wiring harnesses, see if they have what you want, they are sold in many outlets like SCR, Auto barn, Supercheap Autos, etc, and could order it in for you:
Harnesses - Car Audio Accessories AERPRO

Blue wires: There are usually 1 or 2 BLUE wires coming out of a NEW stereo wiring harness, which are for a) signalling an amplifier to switch on (the whole time the stereo is on), and b)switching on a small antenna signal amplifier (which only gives out a positive signal while the radio is on).

The only problems I've seen with using a wiring harness are usually just the two positives needing to be switched around sometimes. So the Yellow and Red wires, which are Constant Positive, and Accessories/Ignition Positive respectively. If your radio won't save radio stations or any other settings, these two wires need to be swapped. You can just pop the pins out, swap them over & pop them back in.

Also, the best method for keeping the wiring in place to put the original head unit back in is to just 'tap in' to the original wiring harness, don't cut it off. Then, when it's time to re-install the original Head unit, just cut off the 'new stereo' wiring from where it was attached to the original car wiring loom, and tape up neatly the stub of solder left behind..

please don't use ****ty 'clips' like this... they will cause problems..

Bad tapping in, use solder & tape instead!:

You can use 'plugs' and if done correctly, are perfectly fine instead of soldering..

another method: you can always cut and solder the new stereo in, and then when it's time to re-install the original, cut and solder the original plug back on.. there's no shame in it.. it's hidden! But you will want to cut off the original plug so it has more wiring to play with when you have to re-connect it.. a bit more than this picture is desirable, maybe at least double that length..

                              2004 Bora audio setup help

Ok. It is my intention to fit a rear view camera with my new double din jvc.
                              This is the problem....
I was wanting to use the iPhone link option ( a cable that consists of a USB,and red white yellow av connectors ( all of which have to be connected at rear of unit. )) as the unit only has one set of av in, can I achieve both the camera and iPhone ?
