  • noisy starter motor

my son's 2.0l bora starter makes a horrible squeal, only when winding down, no issue when it's starting. is this easily fixed?

what do you mean by winding down? as you are turning off the car or just after its fired up? if its just after its fired up and then the noise happens the starter motor will be sticking in and need replacement unit... VDUB...

Probably a dry throw out bearing. My Beeza is currently doing the same thing. An easy fix apparently but the starter motor has to come out to be lubricated.

Mine does this, re conditioning the starter did not fix it. Lubing it made it better for a short while.

I thought of replacing it about 8 years ago but thought I might see how long it lasts.

mine makes that noise on and off.
thought about replacing the motor, 5 years later the noise has gone and motor is all good still, no lube, no refurb.
I just try to keep some money aside for that day when it does let go...

I have a budget for just these things, the $3k gearbox issues late last year cleared it out pretty much.

The squeal is usually associated more common in manual gearbox cars. The reason being clutch dust dries out any lubrication in the starter motor itself and starter bush in the bell housing, always a good indictor of how a driver uses the clutch....change the bush when lubing the starter...always helps..cheers steve

your probably on the money steve. the car has 200k on the clock and the previous owner spent 2k 2 yrs ago replacing clutch, flywheel and drive shafts, also the syncro's on a couple of gears bite a bit

How would you tell it it looks OK ? There is no dipstick, just fill till it overflows.

I changed mine a while back, after that shifts were a lot smoother, especially at high revs into 2nd.
I used Redline MT 90. I even have about 700ml left over should you need some. And the 17mm hex tool to remove the drain bung.

thanks for the advice. is the oil you use different to normal gear oil?
another question, is the engine oil vw specific (2.0l) like my other son's TD T5?
